The only truly accurate method is to check it on a track where you can work the distance out to a metre & use a 'Measured' fuel container containing say 1 litre of fuel.
There are too many variables otherwise to get a really accurate reading of fuel consumption.
The B is a car to be driven & enjoyed I can't see this obsession with .1 or .5 of a litre gained or lost here or there.
I was in to HiFi years ago and in the end all I was doing was listening for the hiss, crackles & pops, I had completely gone off the object of listening to the music.
It's the same with cars you can drive them so gingerly in order to save fuel but the pleasure goes out of the driving.
I am fully with you on this Keith.
There is a certain undeniable challenge to establish the best possible fuel economy - but that never outweighs the fun factor of just flooring it every once in a while.
Rather than squeezing the last drop of fuel out of the B, maybe we should concentrate more on squeezing the last drop of fun our of it. AFAIK, you only go around once, so might as well enjoy it as best as you can.
I'm not too obsess by the consumption (I actually have a 11l/100km so far, that's by itself a statement). I'm enjoying the car, and I don't refrain myself from flooring that pedal when merging on the highway. There are pleasure that you CAN buy !!
Funny you should mention that....my car sees 5500 RPM at least once every time I drive it, and I do accelerate briskly through the gears.
Believe me, if I was driving to maximise fuel economy, my results would probably be 10% better than they are. I'm fortunate that I live in a mild climate and the highways around here are not choked with traffic..... yet, although there are too many stoplights on them.
Lifetime fuel economy records are indeed very meaningful, guys, because the ups and downs from tank to tank are thus moderated by the volume of data. For example, my 330,000 km of records on my Peugeot 405 indicates , which a more accurate/representative number than any one litre/measured distance test could ever hope to do.
Now, if the OBC was only slightly less optimistic.....
I just saw this one today when seeing where I was in the "standings" (#2). I am 0.18 L/100 km behind. At 7.34 L/100 km actual consumption, this person's car should be showing about 6.9 L/100 km on the After Reset screen, if it's not been reset of course.
Latest fill result, from city driving in Vancouver and some freeway: 6.9 L/100 km on the OBC, and a reality check figure of 7.48 L/100 km at the pump.
This just shows that the previous fill was not as "full" as it could have been. It also shows that each result for a tank is not statistically significant, as the standard deviation of the OBC error versus actual fill result is fairly large, alternating between 0.2 and 0.6 L/100 km difference, but the cumulative results are significant and the standard error remains about 0.4 over nearly 10,000 km of recorded actual versus OBC results!
Next tank had the dismal OBC reading of 7.1 L/100 km since reset, the actual consumption was 7.4, so slightly better than the last one, in which the OBC reported 6.9. Average speed was still in the fifties, more urban driving than usual this time.
If you are coming to the Uk Mike watch out for speed cameras they're everywhere now.
