door mirror

I live in the Uk and have just taken delivery of B180cdi. I am dismayed to find that the door mirrors do not fold in. It was never explained that the ONLY option is to take the electric folding mirrors at extra cost. Is this really the case? My son's 10 year old ford, along with every other cheap brand car has manual mirrors. This is an extremely bad design feature and certainly one not pointed out by our salesman. Comments please.

There are quite a number of comments regarding this issue in the very early threads in this forum.

I mentioned this matter to my dealer when swapping my B class to a new one. He claimed that the do fold in but they need a good push to do it.

He went up to an A class and gave the mirror a hefty clout and yes it did go in as other mirrors do, he then did it back the other way & the same thing happened. He then pushed the mirror back to its original position. He stated that it was exactly the same on the B class.

However when I bought my first B class another salesperson did the same thing to a B class on display and the mirror just disloged out of position & she could not get it back.

I have not had the nerve to try it out on my new motor.

If any members have any updates on the mirror saga please let us know.

At least you have the option to buy the folding mirrors. In Canada - our options list is SIGNIFICANTLY shorter than in Europe.

The guy at my local car wash tried to fold my mirrors the hard way before I came running over and told him to stop. They don't actually fold here in Canada. What we found out at the cash wash is that there is a safety feature that allows them to pop off if you really push them hard and this prevent them from smashing if someone bangs into a mirror. The car wash guy popped them off and we had a really hard time getting them back on. Now they are loose and every time I go into a self serve car wash, the spinning brushes which clean the sides of the car knock them off. When I take the car in for service I'm going to get them to replace the mechanism. I think the car wash guy might have bent something when he tried to fold them.....ARGH!!

Jordan.

I wish we canadians have the folding mirror option too. Look at the new 2008 C-class (W204). They have folding mirrors as standard.

The only reason I can see for wanting folding mirrors is that you either park on a European-style street with parallel parking and narrow lane(s), or your garage is ultra narrow.

In a trip across Europe a couple of years back in a Renault Scénic, we only needed to fold the mirrors in once, when parking in downtown Pompeii outside our hotel.

"your garage is ultra narrow."
Not ultra narrow but tight due to 2 single doors instead of 1 double and that's how I broke my 1 st mirror.

Our roads round here are pretty narrow and many a time have I seen bits of broken mirror about as well as someone driving his van down the side of my car a (small ) Ford Fiesta I had at the time.

Proper rectractable mirrors are an essential on any car and as 'oldie' states it is ane extremely bad design feature not to have them & this fact should be made aware to prospective customers.
I would like to know if the mirror design has been changed recently though.
Surely if they knock back in the way demonstrated to me on the humble A class then they should at least be the same (or better) on the B class

I can understand the need for it in Europe but in 30 years of driving here I've never needed them! Never hit a mirror on anything!
