thanks for your input everyone. Any suggestions how I take this further - it was certainly never made clear to me that the mirrors were not retractable. I've been to see thesalesman who of course seems to thinkthat he pointed out the electric option to me (which he did not), shall I take it to a higher level. I think we will have to have electric mirrors fitted retrospectively but I do not want to pay the cost involved which I'm sure will be higher than factory fitted.
Don't know if they can be fitted retrospectively.
I would definately take the matter up with the head salesperson of the dealership. After you have received your car there is a questionaire sent to you regarding the sales transaction. The salesman is supposed to get I think about 95% total satisfaction or he has to fill in a report. Tell the dealer that you are really going to put in a bad report about them that may help in getting some action.
The salesman has just come back and quoted me £685 for a retrospective fit. This is outrageous the cost of factory fit was £165. Unfortunately I had already sent the questionnaire back before noticing this detail. Although I don't think I did give the salesman a 100% rating. I'm now taking this up with MB directly.

In the UK the base sticker price for a B200 (non-turbo) is about 20k GBP (including VAT). In Canada the base sticker price for a B200 (non-turbo) is about 30k CAD. That means the UK car is about 40k CAD inclusive of taxes. We'd be about 34-35k (depending on your province) inclusive of taxes.
I know in Canada we can haggle on price - not sure if the same holds true in the UK - I know as a repeat owner (I always use same dealer and sames sales guy) I can experience quite good discounts off the MSRP.
We get more equipment on our base and if I remember correctly enjoy a longer warranty (4 years / 80,000km) versus their (correct me if I'm wrong) 3 year / 36,000 miles. Seems like quite a premium for them considering ours come via ship and then ground transport from Halifax. Their cars only have ground transport from Germany to contend with.
I agree they have some cool features we don't get - but I think thats probably offset with the better value (bang for buck) we enjoy!
I did that and my car would have cost nearly $7000 CAD more in Germany (BEFORE taxes, i.e. excluding MWSt) than it will cost here, when identical equipment is added to the poorer EU-base specification. That is at MSRP too.
