Strange smell in B200T

I've had a strange smell in my B200T since picking it up new December 05. It's oddly similar to a new car smell, which I ignored when the car was new, assuming it would go away. Now it seems to just emanate from all over the car with no chance of dissipating. It smells like some sort of VOC left over from manufacturing, and while I find it to be rather obnoxious, some members of my family actually find it to be nauseating. It's particularly bad when a small draft comes in from open windows, but sometimes I can smell it when the car has been parked over night and I step in the morning. It also seems noticeable if you've been exposed to fresh air for a while. The worst part is it's not the "in your face" kind of odour, but you gotta sit for a while, and it just seems to waft up slightly, and honestly, after 10-15 minutes in the car, it's extremely irritating.

I've tried opening up the windows, "baking" it in the sun with the windows open, leaving windows open all night, removing as many interior panels as I can in the process, heck, even removing the spare tire and its compartment fearing that it was a plastic smell from the tire (I was getting desperate). Nothing helps.

Aside from my own efforts, I've brought it to the dealer SEVERAL times, even escalating the problem to MB Canada when nothing got fixed on the dealership level, but other than a few courtesy calls, nothing has been done other than going in, smelling it, and saying "nope, no smell". Granted, I agree on ONE (of several days) days I brought it in the smell was less noticeable, this really drives me nuts. Any suggestions on what to do? Has anyone noticed this problem too? I've tried posting this on several forums, but with the B-class only available in Canada for the N.American markets, it doesn't seem to help much.

You might check the battery compartment - is the battery the sealed type or does it have a plastic tube vent connected to it? Is the vent pipe connected correctly at both ends.

Ask your dealer to remove the undercar panels and check for slight oil leaks. It might possible to get small collections on under panels which don't drip onto the garage floor.

Just some thoughts - don't hold me to them

This is a copy from an earlier thread on this subject

Received a private message from a person called Hadi asking me to post it on the forum so here it is copied verbatim.

Can anyone help him out ???

" hello there, sorry for writing u directly, my Name is Hary and i just baught the B200 5 month ago. since then, am getting a very ugly and terrible smell in the cabin. regardless if the vents are on or off, or the A/C is on or off, or the air circulation. usually i get it as i speed up a bit above 100 KM/h or when u break or slow down.

the car was to the dealer 3 times, and at no time they could figure out the problem. this last time, they called me telling thta they have tried another B class and it seemed to have a similar problem, noting that it might be a factory fault.

i could not post this problem, so i reverted to u.. hopefully u can post it online and we can get some feedback from the group. "

by the way, i live in Dubai and the car has Gulf Specs, so it might be different from what u have in canada or the states. "

thanking u in advance...

Regards,

Hadi

I don't know if he resolved the problem though.

I used to get a strange smell from the air coming in ( probably the aircon filters)
Do you have any form of rubber mats, the ones in the Renault Scenic I used to have gave a terrible smell & I had to remove them

Hi
leave the car at the dealership overnight keep your keys lock the car, go there first thing in the morning to show them the strange smell.
I had a musty smell coming from the car air vents every time I went into the car in the morning. They changed the air filter for aircon and disinfect the air vents.

The air con filter should be changed more often than regular interval specially if you use aircon a lot.

I asked the dealer see to the air con filter it was dirty as hell after only 12000km

Also check the battery it has to be venting out not into the car.

I have no more bad smell in the car.

Good luck

I have this too. The smell is rubbery like and seems to be coming from the space where the tirefix kit is stored. The kit is fully intact, sealed and odorless. The smell seems to be coming from below the storage compartment.

Thanks for the help everyone. Much appreciated. A/C has been ruled out though, and the first time I took it in, the dealership had said there were no oil leaks (I suppose I have to take their word for it)

deheld-I noticed the exact same thing, hence I took out the spare tire and kit as well. I have a feeling it comes from some of the inner compartments within the car, perhaps some glue or finishing chemicals for the plastics. Did you ever take it into servicing?

No, I never did that. I just tried to ventilate the car and spray some deodorant in it. Next service I will mention it.

My 06 B has a strange smell also. I figured it was just because it was new, but it's still there. Like the smell of a earaser.
It comes from the vents but disappears with the AC on.
I'm taking it in to the dealer tommorow. I'll post what or if anything they find.
Cheers!

Well, i got the ever popular "could not duplicate condition at time of inspection" response.
The loaner 07 B had a simmilar but not as strong smell.
I guess all these B's stink.
