Angry Steering wheel problem/noise..

Hi to all. By having my B serviced i tried to solve some problems that came up after 2 or three months after i bought it. One of them was a "cracking" noise on the steering wheel when the car was not moving and trying to change direction in any position of the total travel of the wheel. I told them the problem in the beginning and they told me that it was due to some screws which would be fixed on the 1st service... When i went to the 1st service (on demand as i described in other thread) they told me: 'ok its not a problem.. all these cars make this noise' !!!!!??????

They should have looked. BUT... just today when all doors and windows closed (quiet)... i realized that now the noise is not like before (one or two ticks) now its a continuous cracking on the first two or three spins of the wheel when you change direction (always the car stopped)...what do you think?

Has anyone noticed this noise on his B ? Please give me your feedback so i can start "war" with the dealer or not!!!

Thanks!

P.S. I forgot to mention that if you have someone inside the car to make the movements left and right and you open the hood and hear from the engine you'll hear a metallic cracking/squeaking noise from the steering bar of the car...

Checkout the threads on page 7 " B Class Nightmare " & " Steering Problems " both posted by MDL ( I am not sure if he is still an owner / member as I don't recall seeing any posts by him lately) Maybe you could send him a private message to see if his was a similar problem & if he was able to get it fixed.

hi kdbcom, i read all these stories and got frightened ! I hope that it's not the same problems with mine as i think there is NO chance at all that they replace the car. And this is my fault also because the car has very low mileage and the problem started in the first 2 or 3 months and then probably i had some decades of km's on my dash and i believed them so wait 1 year for the 1st service to come... The only good thing i guess is that my noise seems to be very low and you need quiet environment to hear it... OK from tomorrow i'll start a series of calls to see what i can do..

Please any other members who have or had similar problems o leave their feedback here...

P.S. Does anyone know any direct e-mail address of their centrals in Germany?

thanks

Try Mercedes website Customer Care section you will be able to e-mail direct from there BUT they will only go to the dealer, at least this would be a start

Mercedes-Benz UK - Passenger Cars - The Company - Contact_us

I would not hold your breath expecting any action from them, however, as I recently had terrible problems with them (customer service) . I can honestly say that they are the worst customer service people I have ever dealt with. In fact they were so useless that I had to send a letter of complaint to their head manager.

Hi George,

Every now and again I here noises from the motor compartment, like a secondary motor running , not related to driving. It's hard to tell what it is and the dealer's not sitting beside me to answer my questions. We all have little unknowns with our B's and a service and repair manual sure would help us a bit !

You should try contacting the regional service rep. You have to start putting pressure from outside the dealership to get answers. Negative press always hurts these slow moving dealerships. Hear in North America we have a few options to get them moving, I hope you do to. Document everything you did and do, every phone call, every name you speak to. This can help you backtrack to get it resolved in your favor. Derek

Thanks Derek. I called them yesterday and i will call again on Monday on when the service supervisor will be back from vacations. They say they know my problem and they are expecting the parts for back disc brakes and also will look the steering wheel...lets see....

Also for ASSYST they told me that in our country the services are 5000km earlier because of higher temperatures and dust... BUT.. if service A would come on 20000, service D would come on 35000... Now i have 3700 and D is coming on 18700... I think that ASSYST is only a way to take our money!!! It doesn't do anything special.. its only like an alarm clock which countdowns the kilometers!!!

P.S. As for the service manual, i have the info that i want, BUT the problem is the Star Diagnosis system (DAS) for which the interface (best price from ebay) costs around 6000$ and there is nothing compatible till now... IF I HAD THIS... i would never had gone to the service!!!

Cheers!

Continuing on this problem i have to inform you that i took it to the dealer and they programmed to replace rack-and-pinion steering system.... They told me this like they didn't know exactly the source of noise and i hope that noise will stop because this seems to be an advanced procedure (adjustments, one use bolts and etc...)
Also they will replace both back disc brake plates...

I'll let you know for the results which i hope to be good!

At least they are doing something positive & it is the same part (steering rack) that they replaced on 'mdl's B class so you may get the problem fixed. Keep us informed.
Why are they changing the back disc back plates ??

About disc brakes, probably the pads from the one side didn't touch right from the beginning so the result was one zone about 2-3 cm on which you can see only rust... the pad doesn't touch at all, so they decided to replace both sides for right balance on brakes.

P.S. Of course i got ready yesterday by shooting some nice pictures (marked the safety bolts) and video shoot the noise. As soon as i manage i will upload it on youtube so other people could compare this noise if they have similar problems. The sound on video is heard VERY clearly and nice(!)...

P.S.2. Today they informed that the parts aren't here so we wait from Monday... I'll keep the thread informed...

Thanks
