George!!! I've never heard anything like it before. We have electric steering on the B. So maybe along with the steering rack, everything must be checked. It's your steering, so you can't take chances. The dealer has to respond to that terrible sound! Derek

I think you're right Derek. Thats i why i took my precautions so the problem will be solved completely. About the noise, as terrible it hears from the engine compartment as less noticeable is from the passenger's side... From inside the car, you only feel some cracking-like noise on the steering wheel... you hear almost nothing...

I'll let you all know about the progress of my problems..

Thanks

Hmm... i have some news on this case...

Today after 2 1/2 weeks i went to the service for the replacement...

After one whole day i went to take the car back and they told me that they didn't replace the rack and pinion but they adjusted something and they are expecting instructions from centrals.. So this mean that i will go for the 3rd time again to fix the problem...

Reading the problems of other people here and comparing mine also, i am starting to wonder about this brand... is this a matter of luck ?

Because, OK.. if you're lucky the car will have no problems and will last a long.. BUT what about if you need after sales support? Maybe Toyota or Huyndai have better services at last..(!!!)

to be continued...

Hi again... accidentally i met a girl who has a B170 about 4 months now.. We discussed about our cars and i asked her about the noise on the steering wheel.

I was surprised when i finished my story, that he had heard also the same noise(!) but never gave attention on this!! I asked her to have her car checked in the service...just in case...

So.. please if you haven't checked yours, do it when you have the time...and state it here... maybe its a common noise on all B's so i won't have my rack & pinion replaced without reason!!! (i am afraid because its a complicated job!)..

ATTENTION: If you like to test your steering system, let the car stopped on a flat road, without handbrake on, stop the music, close all windows and listen carefully when you turning the steering wheel and especially when you change direction near the left or right end.. (where the system needs maximum force). The noise is like cracking and is very low from passengers side... I would say also that you can "feel" it on the steering wheel. From the engine compartment it hears like when the exhaust system is hot (on older cars) and colds down... this noise tick-tack-tack...(!) but a little bit louder... (of course it has nothing to do with the heat, it is produced independent of the engines temp condition...)

Please give me your results here, i would appreciate this very much!

THANKS IN ADVANCE...

P.S. The noise is also produced with the engine off but it needs much more force to turn the wheel.. with this test its proved that its a mechanical noise and not from the electric motor which on this time is off...

Thanks very much for your answer. I don't believe that its a major problem, but for a mercedes this IS a problem... My previous 4 cars (much cheaper brands...) had never problems like this on the steering system... I believe that if we are many people with the same problem, maybe MB should check something on this part or the production line... what do you think?

Mine is in again - for the 10th time in 14,000 km for the check engine light again - plus a steering noise. At first they suggested the rack as well, but now they seem to think there is a TSB to lubricate something...

When speaking with them today, I mentioned that their loaner (6,000 km) is making the same noise - but a little less so.

Did you ever get a reply??

Y es but just a typical cop-out letter.

Strange I did not get a survey form regarding customer service. In every other dealing I have had with M/B I have had a survey form. I wonder why ?????
