Hey everyone. Winter in Alberta is just around the corner and since the temp. was only 12C yesterday, it got me thinking about winter tires. I have a feeling the car will be murder on bad roads. Maybe some of you who have had their cars for a couple of winters can suggest some great tires? It's pretty dry here in the winter and we don't get tons of snow, I just need something that's great on ice and pretty good chewing through the snow. Thanks.
I have a turbo as well and have the standard tires and didn't find them too bad for Ontario winters - although my daily commute is about 5 minutes to the train station.
I too am thinking about some winter tires - primarily because I want some winter wheels to protect the alloys from the salt. Honestly, I found the car to be pretty good in the winter - but then my dad has always driven a Porsche in the winter so my comparison my be way off....
Does any one know if the original Mercedes hubcaps will fit any generic rim?

Hi Anthony and Jeff,
I immediately ordered the steel wheels and winter rubber from the stealer when I received my B in Dec. 2005. They asked me to take possession of the car early because a large blizzard was coming in.( a common situation at lac Hughes) The winters are Michelin Pilot Alpin(great but not cheap). There are great winters out there and the technology is evolving all the time. If you're not driving crazy, I would recommend Yokahama's(better value). I think the winter MB hubcaps will only fit MB steel rims because of the way they grasp the steel rims.(a fine spring steel wire wraps around the whole rim and snuggly grips at many locations.
On slippery roads, the ESP works fantastic and you feel it and see it in the dash when wheelslip occurs. The traction control pulled me out of a ditch when towing would normally be needed but remember it's not AWD or 4WD.
Cheers, Derek

Care to share how expensive is the steel wheel, caps and Michelin Pilot Alpin combination cost, and what size rim is the winter tire on, my guess is 16"? I put Dunlop Winter tires on my E and S which provided good traction in the winter time. I need to put winter tires on my wife's B as the low profile sport 17" tires and alloy wheels is way too glamour to live through Canadian winter season. Thanks.
Thanks for the information. I was afraid that the hubcaps would only fit Mercedes brand steel rims - and I'd therefore have to pay more $$$.
Again - not wanting to sound rude, do you mind sharing the price of the rims and hubcaps? If it adds up to too much, I may be better off buying some cheap generic alloys (right size and offset) from Canadian tire or something.
I bought a set of used wheels for my 98 129 sport and had them mounted with Michlien Ice Tires. We get some nasty weather in Michigan and I had no problems getting around all winter
I have the standard steel rims with MB hubcaps fitted with Michelin Alpin Pilot (195 size) for the winter.
The MB steel rims came with the car, alloy was fitted by the dealer, so I got them free of charge (or I paid them with the car).
Sorry for the delay, I was away kayaking( getting it in before the snow flies)! I paid about 1600$ CAD plus tax for the Pilots,OEM steel rims & hubcaps from the stealer at the time of purchase.(Dec.2005) A big storm was coming and I didn't want to get caught with the mags on. Normally I would never pay such a crazy price for steel wheels and tyres but there was no time to search for a better deal. Seeing as it was such a new car on the market at that time, I felt I'd have trouble finding wheels with the right offset to fit in such a short time, so I bit the bullet and let the dealer do it. Side note: My wife loves the winters she has on her car (Yokahama's),so research some winter comparisons and get a good deal. Try the "Tire Rack" or Discount Tire for super deals but make sure they fit before you get them. Derek
Thanks for info. I am not sure if we have Tire Rack in Canada. If they exists in Quebec, I will definitely deal with them. Will do some research with Discount Tire before our short summer is over.

Tire Rack is based in the US but they do ship to Canada. Generally speaking their prices are much, much better than in Canada. They do ship via Fedex so you will be slapped with brokerage fees and possible duties if the tires are not NAFTA. Taxes must also be paid obviously.
