From what I can tell, in Europe, there is a "taxi option" that includes an additional mat under the engine hood for additional sound insulation. Apparently the part numbers are as follows"
A 169,682 03 26 and 8 tie-clips tie-clip A 124,990 08 92
Does anyone know about this option? I'm fairly sure it isn't available in Canada, but I suspect the dealer could order the parts in. Has anyone installed this retro actively? If so, did it reduce the noise levels at all?
Well Jeff, That hood insulator is in stock in Toronto right now. It's only available on the CDI's in Europe and we don't have them in Canada. But for some strange reason, they do have the insulator in stock??? It must be the gold embossed Canadian version because it's 340$ CDN, plus 8 clips @ 2$ CDN each, plus all our #%* taxes and for approx: 400$ you too can have an insulator, plus installation or do it yourself as I did. Cheers, Derek ps: it doesn't change the interior noise level to me.

Thanks for the prices. While it is a lot of money, it's not as much as I thought it might be. Do you notice a noise reduction when outside of the car at least? I've always thought that the engine is quite noisy for a mercedes, even when you walk by the front of the car as a pedestrian.

I agree and I gather it is for the outside noise reduction that this kit is meant for.
That price does seem a lot I seem to remember reading in another thread, that in Europe it was much much cheaper, and that members were using alternative non M/B sound proofing materials.
Can't see it helping with the rust problems I reckon it might make it worse as it would either, trap the water, become soggy , or stop the water from drying out.
Many years ago I used carpet underlay on a Mini's bonnet, it quietened it down ok but it got some petrol on and started smouldering ( It looked like I " lit my tyres up" and was "burning rubber" )
I thought it might get soggy also, so as I said I would, added a mylar sheet with the bonnet(hood) insulator. I will watch it closely to make sure that humidity dose not collect between the insulation and the hood. I can see how carpet would cause problems but I'm sure the price was right. Derek Remember when some people put carpet on their dashs for that fuzzy look!!

The hood insulation is aimed at taxi's to reduce the noise they are making when waiting for customers. The effect is hardly noticable on the inside.
And yes, the Diesel-B makes a lot of noise on the outside, almost like a tractor.
i have bought oem insulation (part no: 169 682 03 26) for b-class few months ago, so let me share my thoughts with you
it costed about 180 euro + 10 euro for expansion plugs (9 pieces) so it's very expensive considering its final effect. in my opinion it hasnt got any influence on engine sound volume, it's completly useless. i wouldnt reccomend it.
i'll post some pics soon
Instead of installing the hood insulation, has anyone explored the possibility of applying either Dynamat or B-Quiet sound deadeners in the engine fire wall area and or the floor boards of the B?
If done successfully and properly, I believe that the net effect in isolating engine noise from the passenger cabin might be more dramatic than installing the hood insulation mat.
hmmmm. I smell another project coming up. . . I have some B-Quiet sound deadener from an older car project I undertook.
