center perforated grill on dash

I have searched and searched.... can't come up with what this perforated grill is there for. I 'assume' it's for a center speaker in the fancy audio option. am I even close?

No,

There can be a speaker. If you order the optional center speaker and woofer in the trunk.
There can also be a ventilation opening. If you have the thermotronic. Then there's a little wheel on it to adjust the flow.

Otherwise it's just a grill on the dashboard.

thanks for that daheld, I imagine for thermatronic this must be where the active charcoal is place to absorb pollutants.... now if I can only figure out how to take the grill off and put a extra speaker in there.... hmmm, anyone know?

Rather than worry too much about the center speaker, if your radio is not the high end one, then change out all the door speakers and the sound will be greatly improved. The original rear door speakers are true garbage, and hard to believe MB would ever put this kind of crap in their cars. Cheers, Derek

for Canada, it's only purpose is to house the LOGIC7 centre channel speaker if you order the h/k sound system.

Agree. The front ones are acceptable 16cm speakers with separate tweeters. The 12cm speakers in the rear are just awful.

Once the weather clears up overhere (we're having lots of rain in July thanks to Al Gore) i'm going to swap them for better ones. Keep you guys posted.

I have the H/K system and the thermotronic installed and the grill is for the centre speaker / air vent, also has the dial for the airflow.

The pic below shows the difference between the original front tweeter (on the left) and the upgraded H/K tweeter (on the right)

Do you think I can retrofit those speakers in my car, with my Audio 5.
Don't need the rear surround ones since my pillars have no openings there..
Just want the front speakers and tweeters and the rear speakers.

The rear surround speakers came with a complete new trim piece, the original didn't have any holes for them.
