I am considering getting a new MB's 17" or 18" rim for my B. Is there anything I should aware of before switching from my stock 16" in regard to drive comfort, road handling, and scratching? I read 17" and up is not recommand for winter driving. Why is that?
The three rims that MB offers are:
17" Zaurak 7-spoke
17" 10-spoke
18" AMG Style III 5-Spoke
I don't have sport package so 17" 10-spoke is not available. I like the AMG rim but it is 18". Can you post some closeups of the 17" Zaurak 7-spoke if you have them? The best pic I got doesn't show clearly.
BTW, what is the color on that AMG. Polar silver? It looks very nice under showroom lighting.
Have got the 17" 10 spoke sports rims on my current B class. I have just ordered a new Polar Silver B for delivery next month. I have decided not to go for the sports pack or 17" wheels again as they are so easy to kerb in fact this is the worst car I have had for getting kerb damage. Also they (in combination with the lowered sports suspension) make for a very hard ride it feels like you are on solid tyres. Am hoping the standard 16" alloys with the normal suspension gives a smoother ride without losing the excellent handling that the present combination gives. Still what you gain on the swings you lose on the roundabouts
Not sure if I read somewhere that you cannot fit snow chains to the MB 17" wheels whether that was just the 10 spoke ones I'm not sure. I think it was in the forum about a year ago
So you are not recommanding 17" or even that 18" AMG rim? I don't have sport package and is a non-turbo. I notice that the standard five-stoke/edge on the rim sits a bit inside the rim/tire so it won't scratch easily than that 17" and 18" AMG. It really ride bad on 17"?
I dont think the color on that showroom b-class is polar silver. this colour is reminding me mercedes bluetec models which were introduced in the similar colour but i can be wrong
kdbcom, you didnt say anything that you are going to buy another b-class... congratulations.
I have one of the first '07s that came to Canada - and it went to the dealer 7 times to fix the same problem. I THINK the problem has been solved (after a 1,200 km trip from Toronto to Montreal), so hopefully the worst is behind me. Like you, the car suits me perfectly - the turbo is fast enough, comfortable, good gas, safe, etc. If this problem is the only one I get in 100,000 km I guess I'll be happy - time will tell...

Well I am going from the 17" to the 16" because of the hard ride (speed bumps are awful even at slow speed) and yes the 17" rims seem almost outside the tyre
today I say b-class with 17 inch 10 spoke rims and i payed attention to it. on the edge the rim was damaged and it didn't look most nicely but it could be caused by our evil roads
I was lucky enough to park next to a B one day with that 17" Zaurak 7-spoke I am interested in with the same body color as my B. That rim looks really nice in person. However, most of you don't like the handling of 17" and it getting scratch easily.
It's horses for courses really. In an ideal world all roads would be smooth like a race track but as we all know there are potholes, speed humps & debris on the road+ high kerbs. I love the "handling & roadholding" of the 17" wheels it's just that in the real world they are not overly comfortable or practical. If you are prepared to accept an overall harder ride and are able to always guarantee on not catching a curb then the 17" or larger are the ones to go for.
