Agreed, but I don't think you would have let that rust get that bad without getting it sorted. I know I wouldn't. It does appear to be in a visible place.
There was definitely something wrong in the prep and paint on that rusty car. But you see them peeling back that thick(caulking) molding. Besides the rust all over the panel, it was full and trapped under that caulking and that's why they're peeling it off.
Joe, sure rust will start at the site of an accident, but that's not it. Rust starts in a break in the paint at the microscopic level often by flexing in a seam. The metal is exposed and the humidity creeps in. The paints never get in to those seams properly, no matter what they say.
Salt only accelerates the rust process.
Remove the oxygen from contact with the metal and it won't rust 'even if it's immersed in water'.

Just bought a B class, first Mercedes !! Very happy so far
I live in Quebec ! I'm seriously considering applying a rust proofing coat, from "Metropolitain Rust Proofing". Derek you said that this will void body warranty ? It's only 4 years anyways .... What do you guys think ?
I've always have my car treated, and it is the best protection here in Quebec.
The rust warranty is 5 years.(I think)
None of these rust proofing applications is any better that the person applying it. I've always had to go back and show them where they missed. A lot of time lost and a lot of frustration.
And a bunch of nice holes drilled all over your nice new Mercedes. I just couldn't do it.
Your B has a good application of thick cavity wax already applied on the underbody. What can I tell you???
In the west end, there is a well known shop that applies grease in a spray and that is by far the best. They are more fussy than most and take more apart, so they drill ' less' holes. Naturally it costs more but lasts a lot longer.
I'll find the name and post it soon. Cheers, Derek

Now from mid 2007 and 2008 all B bonnets have the missing drainage holes I complained about so very long ago when I first received my B in 2005. They changed the inner stamping just like I requested but they forgot to acknowledge it. Ha! Ha! At least someone in Benzland is reading these postings! So for all you 2008 B owners, you've got a better bonnet than we do and that's great news for the new B's. Mike you lucky guy! Cheers, Derek

I've revised this posting to reflect the changes in the mid 2007 & 2008 models. The mid 2007 & 2008 bonnet have drainage slots added in 2 places. One on each side where the water would have most certainly been trapped. If all of the 2006 and early 2007 owners complain to their regional service reps maybe something can be done to rectify the problem before the rust starts. Hope to hear back from you all. Cheers, Derek
