Question Removing door panels to install felt for tinting

Anyone know how this is done? How difficult is it? The reason I want to know is that I want to installl some felt on the panel to prevent the tint to get scratched. I read that MB's gasket is so hard that it will scratch the tint. I have Huper Optick film installed. Anyone able to help?

From the turbo/non turbo thread...

OK…I talked to the guy who installed the tint on my B about installing felt and he said that I don’t have to worry about that because there was already felt on the weather stripping on this car. He will install felt if a car needs it and the charges start at about $300 because the panels do have to come off.

I talked to the shop that fixed the dents but not the guy who actually did the work on my car because he had just stepped out. But he they guy I talked to said that if you take your time it can be done with out breaking anything, and of course be careful if there are airbags. He said its best not to do any work around the air bag at all if possible. Are there air bags in the back door? I thought they were in the pillars. I did have one small dent on the left rear door fixed the same way they fixed the front dents, with out taking the door panels off – pounding them from the inside out – they did not seem to have a problem with that.

I used to work on my cars all time but have not attempted anything on this one yet because if I screw it up I have no choice but to take it to the dealer as nobody here in Calif wants to work on the car because they have never seen one before. You might want to take the instructions you got to the dealer (guys in the parts dept are usually good for all kinds of info) or to a body shop that works on the B class and see what they think.

I had Madico Charcool CH55 put on the back doors and tail gate and will have one of the Huper Ceramics put on the front doors and windscreen.

Good luck

Are you sure yours is a b-class? US doesn't has that class. I see there is a soft felt on the outside of the window strip on four windows, not the inside though..

Sure is! I bought it in Canada. I'm probably the only one here in the States with one.

The guy who installed the tint says that mine is OK because he checked it. I checked it myself just a little while ago just to be sure and it is 'felt like' - soft and fuzzy.

btw...you are right it is not the same but still soft. I'm going to see him later this week I will ask him again just to be sure. This guy has been tinting windows for more than 20 years so I trust him not to stear me wrong...if it scratches he HAS to replace the tint free of charge.

My tinter also will replace the tint if it get scratched and install felt at that time. . But why not to prevent it then to replace it? Save time and trouble. If you look closely at eye level from the inside, you can see the outside strip is higher and on the inside strip is lower and is level to the inside door panel.

I wonder if it is possible to install felt properly by just lowering the windows and not remove the door panel.

You bet, better to prevent rather than do it over again. I’ll have him take a look and give me his expert opinion on whether he thinks it can be done that way. My concern would be that a small part of the window does not go all the way down into the door. But either way you do it it’s going to take time and patience.
