Just come back from a holiday in Devon witha a fairly brisk run back. Car was had the 2 of us and was loaded to the gills with luggage + 1 electric powered mobility scooter + 2 wheelchairs + other mobility equipment (& all the clothes the wife bought)

The car is B200 cdi CVT auto box a lot of the journey was done in cruise control and the first 60 odd miles are hilly.

average speed 58 mph at 42.3 mpg = 93.4 kph at 6.69 L /KM

Total for holiday with a lot of pottering up & down hilly areas was

512 miles with an average speed 40 mph at 39.8 mpg

I just got my car and did a run to Seattle WA USA in it. I zeroed the "after start" after clearing the 1.5 hour border queue and when we arrived at downtown Seattle the indicator was at 6.2 L/100 km. that was on Interstate 5, with two up, a set of 4 snow tires on steel wheels and assorted other luggage, two stops, some urban driving and cruising speeds of 110-120 km/h. If it is correct, that would be 45.5 imperial MPG.

The car has under 1000 km and the first tank as a whole gave 8.04 L/100 (I think I filled it more than the dealer did). There was 3.5 hours idling in border queuesand city driving.

Great mileage for a new engine.

Unless the 2008 has changed the miles per gallon are US not Imperial. I use the digital read out for miles per hour here in the States and go back and forth to check out km/hr and lt/100km. I’ve compared it to the results of this conversion calculator.

CalculateMe.com - Convert Liters Per 100 Kilometers to Miles Per Gallon (US)

But the big question is...do you like your new B? And why snow tires?

I converted the L/100 to IMP MPG myself...

I like it, although the seats are taking some getting used to. Too many adjustments! I find German car seats to be brutally hard compared to those of the French cars I used to drive.

I really like it a lot, and the economy potential is there. I will definitely be able to get under 6 L/100 km on an economy run.

Hi

Mike's readings and conversion are in imperial.

Most people have a formula to convert L/100K to MPG imperial, but for those who don't here is how to do it

" Kilometers traveled divided by liters used and then multiply by 2.83 "

Using Mike's example from dash reading

100/6.2*2.83 = 45.64516 MPG imperial

Hi Mike
We are traveling to Washington state this week and hope not to have major lineups at the border. Last visit to Seattle produced average speeds of less than 80 km/h.
You should have kept the standard wheels on the car. Firstly so our friends to the south can see how nice the car looks. Secondly snow tires make them think we are the Great White North
Like the colour of your car, when we looked around it was our first choice. The one we found did not have the sunroof so we kept looking around. Polar Silver and Grey interior.

Hi Bill,

I will be over there again this weekend in the B 200....maybe going to Bellingham .......I had the steel rims and snowies inside the car last weekend and the original alloys with Contis were on the car at the time. I expect to put the snowies on the car later this month.

I should add that the first tank rating of 8.04 L/100 km was showing as 7.7 on the car's dash, but as I said, I pumped about one or two more litres into it than the dealer did, at least I think so. So my L/100 seems to be pretty close to the car's own estimate.

On my commute to work over the past 2 days, the car has been averaging 6.8 L/100 for a 27 km drive, with a cold start (car lives outside). That's pretty impressive to me! My smart does about 3.7 in the same conditions, but it weighs about half as much. I hope to keep the car's lifetime average to under 7.5 and preferably closer to 7.0. The "after reset" screen is showing 7.5 L/100 right now. The car it replaced has an 8.2 lifetime average, over 365,500 km (on regular fuel). I will normally be commuting in the smart, but my daughter has it in Victoria at the moment.

The highest I have seen on mine was 9.1 and the lowest was 8.x. Is that good or bad? When is the best time to read them to be consider accurate?

The best thing to read is the "after reset" screen, but even better still is doing actual calculations yourself, when you fill the car.

Remember, I was hoping for you to see a realistic average of 6.7 to 7.0 like I do.(even though you were hoping for better) But that requires gentle driving.
If other family members are driving your B, I feel it will be almost impossible to see those averages. Cheers, Derek
