My mistake. I actually went back and checked the dash computer again and my mileage was actually 7.1 L/100 km (which translates to about 33.3 MPG). Throughout my trip between Toronto and NYC, I used 93 Octane Super Unleaded gas and my average speed was 120 kph in Canada and 70-75 mph in the USA. I also checked the web and the MPG computed by the dash computer is definitely using US Gallons. 7.1 L/100 km translates into 39 MPG using Imperial Gallons.
In the old days of traditional auto transmissions, they used to say that you optimized you gas mileage at 55-60 mph. With the new CVT transmission on the B-Class, I'm not sure this is the case anymore. I think the trick to good mileage with the B is not not speed related. I think you just need to keep a consistent speed and avoid any hard acceleration.
Actually there is a huge difference related to speed when using a MT on the B200.
I usually average 6.5 l @ 90 kph and 7.1 @ 105 and 7,7 @ 115 with a normal headwind.
A good headwind changes the #'s quite a bit. Cheers, Derek

Jordan.
With the CVT transmission the best MPG I find is at 2000 revs ,also I do not use cruise control in hilly areas as it hunts up and down and ruins the MP
Present consumption = 8litres per 100 kilometres using Supermaket petrol
Based on the above, I will be shooting for under 6 L/100 km when I drive the car to work. Maybe 5.8....that might be possible at a steady 85 with no wind.

Well Mike that's quite an optimistic # to aim for. I've done that also but you make a lot of enemies when you look in your rear view mirror. More realistically, you will see around 6.7 l/100 km if you drive around 90 to 100.
Cheers, Derek

My best has been 6.1 on a several hour trip on a road with an 80Km/h speed limit with the cruise control set about 90

Well I get about 3.1-3.2 L/100 in my smart cruising at 85-90 on my commute, which is 13-14% less than the "official" highway rating. 6.7*.87 = 5.8
Also, the German Magazine Auto Bild tested a B 200 in 2005 and found that on their loop, the "minimum fuel consumption" was 5.8 L/100 km.
So I think I should be able to do it. We don't get much wind here!
