Maybe a Diesel engine operating an alternator and along with domestic power supply, charging a battery pack, and operating electric motors.

Cheap to operate and with the proper motor lots of torque and speed.

The current B Class diesel option is over $3K more in Europe, and with MWSt (German VAT), the new C 220 CDI BlueEfficiency is a little over 40K Euros.

Thanks Mike, for digging up the $$$ for us. That's not exactly cheap but it sounds like a wonderful performer and with today's environmental concerns, I feel many would opt for it.

I am not sure of the connection between Euro prices and Canadian prices for anything. So, I checked the MB Canada site for the base prices for the E Class with and without diesel and the prices were $ 68100 and $ 65800 for a difference of $ 2300. And, that is for a 6 cylinder E Class so I expect the B Class or C Class differential to be less.
It is doable today - so do it.

So with my latest tank top-up, the car's overall lifetime fuel economy figure has gone down to 7.3 L/100 km or 38.5 MPG! Woo-hoo!

I have just calculated my car's degree of OBC (on-board computer) optimism, compared to "at the pump" readings: it is exactly 0.392 L/100 km too low, measured over almost 30,000 km.

However, I think the odometer may under-read by close to 1%. It does in miles, anyway.....

So, had I never zeroed the "After Reset" screen, it would show 6.9 L/100 km.

Well I have the lifetime CO2 output down to 171 g/km now, which is close to my target of 170. My smart is at 102, on the CO2-rich diesel!

For comparison the CO2 emmissions on the B200 CDI are 140 for Manual (16" wheels) & 159 for the auto (16" wheels)

Yes, but that is the official figure; any car's CO2 output is directly proportional to its actual fuel consumption.
