The selected drive program (S/C) is shown in the multi-function display more.

Press program selector button repeatedly until the letter for the desired drive program appears in the multi-function display more.

Comfort mode C is characterised by the following:

The vehicle pulls away more gently in forward and reverse gears, unless the accelerator pedal is depressed fully.

Traction is increased. This improves the driving stability of the vehicle on slippery road surfaces, for example.

The transmission shifts up sooner. This means that the vehicle is driven at lower engine speeds and the wheels are less likely to spin.

Driving tips
Accelerator pedal position
Your style of driving influences how AUTOTRONIC shifts gear:

Little throttle: early upshifts

More throttle: late upshifts

Kickdown
Use kickdown for maximum acceleration:

Depress the accelerator pedal beyond the pressure point.

The transmission shifts to a lower gear depending on the engine speed.

Ease off on the accelerator pedal once the desired speed is reached.

The transmission shifts back up.

Section below reproduced courtsey of Baby Benz

This backs up my statement on the adaptive driving program in the S mode also there is a point raised regarding the downhill gradients & variable engine braking

Apologies for the long gap down to the extract from Baby-Benz it comes a fair way down the page

To control the AUTOTRONIC functions Mercedes-Benz has developed a powerful microprocessor which is integrated into the transmission. It is linked to the electronic network in the new A-Class via a data bus and also processes the signals from various transmission sensors. These include:

Speed sensors for the primary and secondary discs, as well as the output shaft
Temperature sensor for the transmission oil
Pressure sensor for the secondary discs
Sensor for the selector lever position
The electronic control unit uses the numerous sensor data to calculate the current vehicle speed, the actual torque at the transmission’s input shaft, the flow rates required for the electro-hydraulic transmission control system and the gearshift strategy, i.e. selection of the most suitable ratio and the action of the torque converter lockup clutch. Other parameters relevant to the shift strategy are also included in the calculation process. The transmission control system is also able to take into account the vehicle load, uphill or downhill gradients, the longitudinal and lateral acceleration of the A-Class and the individual style of driving, for example. In this way AUTOTRONIC selects the most suitable ratio for every operating condition and driver requirement.

This is referenced to A class but presumably the B class should be the same

the engine speed is lower at constant speed
The most suitable ratio is always selected on downhill gradients
There is a variable engine braking effect on downhill gradients
Acceleration:
The ratios are changed without interrupting tractive power
The engine reaches its rated output more rapidly
Flexibility:
The engine always performs at its best possible operating point
These advantages ensure a considerable improvement in driving pleasure and performance.
Choice of three shift programs
The new AUTOTRONIC is just as easy to operate as a conventional Mercedes automatic transmission. The selector lever positions "P", "R", "N" and "D" correspond to the familiar shift gate. Pressing a button enables the driver to choose between two shift programs: "C" for Comfort and "S" for Sport.
In the Comfort program the transmission keeps the engine speed at the lowest possible level, so that for instance the A-Class accelerates gently and uses less fuel. In the Sport program AUTOTRONIC becomes adaptive: it automatically recognises the individual style of driving and adapts the gearshift strategy accordingly. If the driver has a more sporty driving style, for example, the transmission makes higher performance reserves available by raising the engine speed, while in the case of a more relaxed, comfort-oriented style the engine speed is reduced

Most interesting will try 1000 miles in S and compare consumption
Many thanks

L/100km

Additional remarks:
I guess it's a lot about driving style; my wife had the car for a 74 km trip the other day, doing 7.6 l/100km. I tend to think of an egg between right foot and the pedal when going downhill and when accellerating following others in the lane. Still I enjoy the good fun the high torque gives when cars behind disappear with a surprise once in a while. Still going from Drammen to Oslo (40 km) the other day, I made all-time-low at 4.1 l/100km. Hope to post a picture next time )

Here in Canada we only have the B200 & B200 Turbo, both are petrol . I baby my B200 and average 6.7 to 7.1 /100 liters. the moment you accelerate past 90 kph you notice the increase in fuel used right away

I took my B200T into BC on the weekend (2000 kms round trip) on the flats of Alberta I got about 8.3 L/100 km (@ 125-130 kph), in the mountains I was getting (7.9 L/100 km) (@ 80 -100 kph). That turbo is great in the hills, specially when you're on mountain logging roads by accident (oops).

And how about oil consumption it would appear that if you fill to just under the maximum (they state you should never exceed the max, due to damage to oil seals) I've noticed that the oil seems to go to the halfway mark fairly quickly (650 mile approx) but to go near the lower mark seems to take about 1500-2000 miles

I did notice after my last service that the dealer had only filled up to the halfway mark could this be the reason ??

I refer to "marks" being the indicators on the dipstick & not the electronic (within instrument cluster) method as I don't really trust the electronic sensing method.

£10 worth of oil (1 litre) for 650 miles does seem a bit expensive.

I would expect the oil consumption to be below 0.1 L/1000 km....I know they say up to 0.8 is "normal".

My smart cdi goes 10,000 km between services/oil changes, and I never have to top it up; in fact not more than 0.3 L of oil is consumed in 10,000 km.
