The floor is sandwhiched - designed so that the engine pushes between the two slices instead of intothe cabin in event of a frontal collision - at the end of the day ??? I hope I never have to find out !!!!

My wife currently has the 98 eclass wagon 4 matic. She likes the new B class but I am wondering about the safety since its a smaller car.
I am looking at a 99 eclass wagon and 2002 ml because they have side airbags and are safe cars.
any thoughts?
The ML is not as safe if you hit a wall, its deformability is less. Also its handling is not as good, and will not steer away as well or brake as quickly.
the ML air bags are a generation behind.
The ML though has good visability. In a side accident, the damage will be less to you because of the height.
The 99 Eclass is a generation behind is generation behind in safety. Its lower too so in side accidents you are more vulnerable. Hitting a solid object in front, its safer than the ML. It handles better too and brakes better.
The B class is latest generation safety, and it handles and brakes well. Its height aids in side accidents and in on road visability. It has the latest intelligent air bag technology. Tests would rate it the safest of the three in most accidents.
They are all pretty safe places to be though, I would rate the ML the lease safe due to its handling, but if your wife is more cautious driving it then it would be pretty safe too and in some cases safer than the others, but in most cases less safe than the others!
There are 2 kinds of safety:
1.car control and braking
2. accident protection for occupants
In the first one SUV generally will loose to any car in similar class.
I like driving my E-wagon much better than ML.
There is no way the owner can compare the accident protection. We have to relay on reviews and crash test, what not always is updated, or available.
I thing ML with it's weight and height gives more protection, than smaller car in the case of accident, but I am not looking forward to test it.
So far I prefer driving my E-wagon on daily bases and keep avoiding accidents (not that other drivers are not giving me lot of occasions to test the skills).
Regarding weight, there is not much difference in weight between the modern mercedes models, since they all use a lot of High tensile steel.
Using 4 cylinder engines to compare the weights:
The weights are 100kg per class of car:
E class weighs1570kg
C class: 1475
B class: 1370
Quite a lot of that weight is made up in the bigger fuel tank, tyres, interior trim and glass, luxury items, none of which adds a hair to safety.

The E Class was rated the safest car on the road and had the least amount of deaths per 1million miles of driving.
I am talking about safety when all else fails and a collision is inevitable by the way
