Well here is a good one to read. Customer brings car in on a flatbed and complains the following;

Cannot engage P or R
Sometimes cannot switch engine off
Central locking will not work
ABR not working.

The techs had worked on this for a week and could not fix it so they sent for me. I always get the PITA jobs. Anyway checked the whole car with SDS and only found a faulty speed sensor.

I thought long and hard about this and then it hit me, back to the car and checked the actual value of the faulty speed sensor and bingo, the sensor was sending a signal to the computer saying the weel was moving at a staggering 278kmph.

So if the computer thinks the car is moving at this speed all of the above symptoms would apply. Changed the speed sensor and all is normal now. Just thought I would share this with you as this is out of the ordinary.

An elegant solution to a tricky problem. As always it's simple but not obvious. Also a good example of an unintended consequence of a reasonable feature. Designers would have to think very carefully to avoid this particular circumstance. I assume it must be an unusual fault condition otherwise it would already be incorporated in some diagnostic knowledge database.

Like many of the problems I am asked to solve, this was a first and one off job and I do not expect to see too many like this. But it does show how much MB are intergrating their control modules, by this I mean who would expect a speed sensor to affect central locking or gear shift?

I would expect an automotive software engineer to prevent entering Park while the vehicle is in motion. Same with Reverse.

As for what speed it is safe to open the doors and jump out, that would require some experimentation which could result in a case brought by the the crash test dummy union membership for cruel and unusual punishment.

I like the integration that turns on the ventilated seats when using the option to open all the doors and sunroof simultaneously and cool off the car.

I believe I noticed the other day that the voice guidance told me the immediate turn direction when I had just set off, before it had finished calculating the entire route and updated the display. If so, a nice touch.

I am in no way a mechanic or claim to be but the first thing I thought of when I started reading your post was a faulty brake pedal sensor (if there is such a thing).
Wouldn't that (or a similar problem with the break pedal) cause this as well?

I recall my 25 minutes support conversation with gateway about my computer and its graphics card... Turned out that I didn't have the monitor we were testing plugged in :D
I had apologized to the support technician for wasting his time.
