Question Balance Shaft Failure, starting what MY or engine num is it fixed?

the balance Balance Shaft Failure that is discussed on

ML350 3.5L Balance Shaft Failure - PeachParts Mercedes ShopForum
and
http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w164...t-failure.html

is indicated with CEL for
P1208 INTAKE RIGHT SIDE ADJUSTER INTAKE
P1200 RIGHT SIDE EXHAUST ADJUSTER.

There is a speculation that the earlier run of production motors had a balance shaft gear that was too soft, and in turn the chain would wear it out prematurely. The new updated balance shaft gear has not shown any issues.
The attached service bulletin indicated W221 (S550) is affected.
If one get this issue, the repair requires engine rebuilt and can be ~$7,000 at dealer.

do you know starting what MY or engine number does MB uses the new updated balance shaft?

thanks in advance for anyone who can shed some light.

thanks for the prompt response konigstiger!

can you advise:
- what W221.186 & W221.171 means?
- how do we find out whether an S550 has engine M272 or M273?

thank you

in US:
W221.171 = S550 LWB
W221.186 = S550 4Matic LWB

M273 engine is a V8 and M272 is V6.

so for S550 in US, to avoid this issue, try to look for engine serial no beyond 2739..30 088611.
anyone has any idea what MY will that be?

Click here ?????? enter VIN – datacard (upper right) – engine # if you cannot pull datacard PM your VIN and I will check if vehicle is within engine # range.

dont have a vin yet, but want to know what to look for, im currently in the market for an s550. dont know whats detailed in a job like that(replacing the gear), but has anyone done it them self. or have the replacement service sheet procedure. jus called dealer, the job is $5000 from what the dealer said, would have to consider that in the price i purchase for if its one of those models.
