Angry Active Parking Assist

So today I saw an A Class parallel park itself i.e the steering had a motor that turned the wheel all on its own. I was a tad bit miffed because my S class will only tell me how to turn the wheel. How is it that this feature found its way onto the A Class and not the flagship model S Class? That said it looked incredibly awesome.

I guess MB assumes there is chauffeur on a W221 taking care of this but unlikely on an A-class.

On the new 212 they have added the parking assist feature that tells when and how to turn the steering wheel but no automatic steering. Isn't this also included on later W221 models, at least some assistance on the cluster display.

Would the A-class actually have an electric power steering? Automatic steering would not add parts in that case. The electric power steering isn't yet as sensitive as the more traditional ones, perhaps not suitable for bigger cars. I was just guessing if this could be one reason for this feature on an A-class but not on the S.

Well I was extensively curious so I went to my Mercedes Dealer here in South Africa and here is what transpired.
Got in an A-Class and we went for a test drive, I asked how the parking worked and the guy said glad you asked let me show you... we were driving around for about 5 minutes until the car found a spot. When you find a spot you have to stop the car and put it in R, It will ask if you want to activate parking assist. I said yes and lifted my hands of the steering wheel and as I let go of the break and the car moved it turned the wheel for me, then I put it into Drive and it did the same thing.
I had a grin on my face... I had a twenty minute chat with the dealer and he said that its an option that has been available in South Africa and Germany for some time now and he would like to assume but was not sure if this was available in the United Kingdom. He had no clue on American markets. He also gave me a brochure with the details and I will try scan it in on monday, no scanner at home. My dealer also said the B-Class had this option.

Fantastic and thanks for your research thus far. I will try to find out if this option is available here in China. One question, when you used the system were you parking between two other vehicles? Or simply moving to the kerb? The answer may give me an idea of how many sensors are involved thanks again. I will also look at DAS for the A and B Class and see if this option is testable, that would provide lots more info on the system.

It was between two cars. So I am assuming it has sensors on the side of the car... I should have taken some pictures, If I have time I will go back and get some pictures, I guess in all the excitement I did not take time to think about the sensors. I do know that the parktronic sensors are active and you can see the indicator leds as it reverses and goes forwards. What I did not understand is how it knows where the curb is.

My point exactly, it must require more than the PTS sensors to achieve this.
