my latest mpg highway numbers: 31mpg! on my 13,000 miles (broken in now) 2007 s550 4matic. i know from the start of this thread that dbtk got 32mpg; i wonder if the difference between his 32 and my 31 is my 4matic system since all four wheels are pulling?
to wit: (a very boring) 60mph for 500 miles trip with windows/roof shut and the air conditioning on last week. chicago to pittsburgh via the turnpike system. 31 mpg!
on the return trip (pittsburgh to chicago), i did 72mph for the same 500 miles (obviously) with the windows down and the air conditioning off, and i got 28 mpg and a sunburned left arm!
this little unscientific study makes me love the s-class even more. and makes me smile when i see adverts on the tele for saturns and toyotas boasting about their 30 mpg highway driving. i blew those claims out of the water driving an arguably MUCH better luxurious auto.
thought you all might like to read about my little trip and the results. i know we don't buy these cars to save on petrol and by owning one none of us care about the $100 fill-up, but i wanted to test what it could do given i had the time and all. and to shove it back in the faces of those that tell us that we drive gas guzzlers. not necessarily the case, 'eh?
Thanks to everyone in this forum for commenting on their real-life mileage experiences. My previous MB's ('85 190 2.3, '92 300E) consistently delivered 19-25 mpg with mixed city/hwy, ~360 miles/wk).
I noticed over the past year, I've developed a lighter touch on the accelerator, so hopefully, my results will more closely reflect the better cases reported here.
I'll pick-up my 2009 S550 black beauty (black, cashmere, P3) this week. The feeling of anticipation is like Christmas when I was a child - but better by 382 horses!
Do you know why they discontinued it? I thought it was a great feature
I don't know really, someone else with closer experience with that system might know, it was not implemented on diesel engines anyway.
I'm guessing it would be emissions related. Wasn't this system operating on one bank only, on the V8, haven't looked at the V12. Modern catalysts need constant high temperature and it might be difficult have that with ZAS.
