Unbiased opinion needed: Keep 91 MB & 08 Porsche 911 OR combine into 1 sports sedan?
Which is better? Keeping a combo of '91 Mercedes 300E (from college days) & '08 Porsche 911 or have just one multi-tasker like BMW 750, 650, M6 (maybe an overkill) or Mercedes S-class?
My car from 91 Mercedes 300E is not dependable for long distance trips due to it age. It stranded me a few times, less than 4 times in the past 5 years which is not bad actually. And that's the reason it's a DD to my office which is less than 10 minutes away. I started to play golf again recently after I got a '08 Porsche 911. Golf bags don't fit into a Porsche with a passenger. Well, it does fit in the rear folded seat area, but with much work involved. I started thinking whether I should continue to drive to out-of-town golf courses my old Mercedes OR to just get rid of both 300E & 911 for just one car like the Mercedes S-class or a BMW 750/650/M6. One drawback: I'm still in my 30's, and I don't want to look like I took out my father's S-class or 750.
What would you do? Keep two cars or just get one comfortable sports sedan? Oh, one reason I got a sports car (had a Corvette and 01 Porsche 911) was because I got bored with the overly luxurious ride in my 91 Mercedes for about a decade. So I have a feeling I'm gonna miss a fast sports car after a while if I go with a sedan. But I would not want to take on a burden of keeping my 911 and getting another large sedan when I'm still single. I would rather use the money somewhere else.
It depends, if you need a reliable, all purpose but fun car I would replace the 300E with a newer multi-tasker. For example, in San Francisco I have a toy, 911 Turbo, for fun and a practical city driver, a MINI S convertible. And, just in case I need to drive friends around I use the Jaguar. I don't really need a long distance car as I live in the city and rarely leave (unless to the airport). In Connecticut I have a toy, a vintage Mercedes 600, for local driving but use the more practical everyday, long distance driver, an S550. In this case, I tend to drive more miles to get to places and hence need the S550. (Can you tell I am single and not burdened with children...or spouse?)
Get a Mercedes CL coupe - then you have both, enough trunk space - and room for passengers (if need be) The CL handles almost like my 76 Porsche 930 Turbo Carrera - that I used to own -
Keep the '08 Porsche and buy something for touring but not a 7, maybe an M5/E55 or new S. The 7 seems so tired now and pimped out much like the Chrysler 300. I'd keep my classic memories car too. Three cars, the old beater, the sports/fun car and the everyday car.

Get rid of both and get a CL550. Best of both worlds in an amazing attractive package. Don't get the BMW unless you like ugly a$$ bangle butt and stupid 'let's control EVERY function possible with ONE knob' i-hate-2-drive.

Well... 745i belongs to a family member, but I do drive it very often. To avoid confusion, I took it out from my signature. 745i in black looks the best, and I enjoy driving that car. It feels like a locomotive. Most people like the new S550, but to me the rear end looks awkward. I like the front end though.
Please note, that by the end of this year current generation of BMW 7-series (E65/E66) will be withdrawn from production line. So I see no point in buying the car that will be dated in a year.
I don't really like 911 for the lack of comfort, so I would have traded both cars for a new W216 CL.
I'd consider a CLS63 AMG. It's based on the E-series chassis, so you're starting with a good sized, well built platform and then adding the unique body styling with 4 doors and usable back seats. And you get a trunk that easily fits 2 sets of golf clubs. You'd be spending less than a CL or S and you get to keep the joy of having a sports car since the CLS63 has great handling and over 500 HP with nearly as much torque. . . I'm just saying!
