I don't find the W221 updates making the Navigation feature too much different from what it was. I personally do not see the bird's eye view very useful or an improvement, more like a nice to have option you can show off with.
A practical improvement is the availability of ETA at the main screen, if so programmed. The info was there previously too but one had to look at it from a menu. This should be available for older Navi units too, like the W211 or W220 DVD based Comand APS. I'm not familiar with the GL though.
The W211 Navigation units get a lot of complaints too but I personally feel it is more of the way it should be used, it may not always be so logical. Plus it seems a fact that the maps content is surprisingly poor on those, a lot worse than Navteq could supply (this is for the US, I believe the Euro maps from the American company are perfect). I'm just guessing the GL would be similar to the W211/W220 while the W221 is a different generation device with hard drive memory etc. etc. W204 would be similar to W221 (with a few more improvements) and W211 and several other models just very recently got the W204 kind of a navi unit.
Perhaps you should look after the possibility to update the Navigation unit to a the very latest one, if GL already got the new device.
