In the past 1.5 years I have leased two new BMW cars, a new 2006 e90 3 series, and a 2006 e60 5 Series,
After reading all the rave reviews about the S550 I was very seriously considering it as my next car, I arranged a Test Drive at Sovereign Mercedes in NY through my leasing company.
After driving 40 minutes to get there at the end of a busy day, I was given a 2 minute test drive around 3 small blocks 1 time, with a young & friendly salesman who accompanied me, When I asked if we could go around the 3 blocks once again, as I really did not have a chance to get a feel for the car, the salesman told me he was unable to allow that, one of the excuses he used was that the dealership wants to keep the mileage low on its test cars.
I should of gone in and spoken with a supervisor, but I was kind of tuned off, and it just left me with a bad taste in my mouth, I really did not get the opportunity to appreciate the car.
I am just wondering if this kind of 2 minute test drive is considered normal. are mercedes dealers really so cheap?
I'm not trying to defend MB dealers or claim that you would normally get better service from MB compared to BMW (after all, people like myself are ex BMW owners, not because of the perfect service at the dealer but because of the car) but this car you tried must have been one that is supposed to be sold to its coming owner as new.
I doubt you would want to have a BMW as a new car after tens of test drivers having driven "another time around the block".
They should however have informed you that they don't have a demo car that you could test as you wish. If you were not bound to this leasing company (perhaps you are not), you could check from another MB dealer if they have a proper test car.
Happy driving what ever you decide, BMW is not a bad choice in case you make the mistake and don't go for an MB :-)
Yes my 5 series is fully loaded, HUD heated everything, comfort seats etc etc, when I get back in to my car I appriciated how good it was.
I was not aware that they would allow a test drive in a car that they are selling as new im quite suprised actually because that means your getting a used car.

That's why you also pay attention to mileage, even in new cars. None of the dealers of any brand around has ever done before. They usually have their own demo, and if you have one on the lot that you're eying, they'll let you test drive that.
So in the end, just go to a different dealer and see if they have a demo for you.

So I take it you’re in Brooklyn, relocated to AZ about 14 years ago - remember when Sovereign was over by the funeral home, they were the worst! Contact one of the following dealers for a proper test drive. If and when ready to purchase get some email quotes from southern CA dealers and see if any local dealers will match or better. If not Ray Catena, Edison 1-732-549-6600 has been known to deal - best of luck.

BTW, owners and techs alike have nothing but good things to say about the 221. Once my CLS lease is up I’ll be moving over to the S550. Check out MBUSA W221 Bulletins to date - MBWorld.org Forums – most bulletins are for early production vehicles and overall nothing to loose sleep over.

I don't really like my local dealer for a variety of reasons, but when we bought our ML350, and then again when I drove an S500, we went for very long test drives on a variety of roads. Each drive was a good 20 minutes or so.

I would not go back to the dealer to do a business. I went to the one local dealer ship and test drove 07' CLS550 and ML500 by myself. No sales person in the car so i was able to do what ever with the car. I was gone for at least 20 to 30min on each car. The sales person was busy with other customer at that time so he was able to help me more after the test drive.
Other local dealer ship where i ended up buying S550, she let me test drive the S for a little while and also let me test drive their first CL 550 Launch edition (2 days old) ever arrived for a long time.
I am a young guy and both dealers still took a great care of me. I even showed up with my work truck (2002 chevy sliverado).....
