If you feel that 4matic is a waste of money, then do not get it. I live in Boston and I swear by it. I've seen thread where people state that RWD with ABC is a better choice (just as good in snow, and better drivability in good weather), but I have no expeirence with ABC. After 3 years with my current S500 4matic, I'll be sticking with that when I order my new S550 in April.

I don't get the point that ABC would make the car as good in snow as if was 4WD. I don't think it makes any noticeable difference for traction in snow.

I can't see 4WD a waste of money. It was not available when I bought the car but in my case it would have been out of my budget even if it had been available. I had preference on other extra equipment.

As much as I know about New Jersey, I'm sure one can manage with a RWD but a 4WD makes a huge advantage at certain conditions, but only occasionally, not throughout the winter. I cannot think of any other advice than carefully selecting options in the order of personal preference and selecting all that are in your budget, if you have one, and then take some more :-)

Very true, although I don;t think the S550 is a vehicle to consider if you are working with a budget. : )

We also live in NJ, and i can tell you now that 4-matic isn't always needed. But thinking back to a few years in the past when we had more snow storms then this mild winter, it would of made a world of difference.

We have an Lexus LS430 and with the size and weight of the car, RWD was turning it into a sled with the slightest snow shower. I think the same would apply to the S550 regardless of ABC.

I like the feel of 4-matic in dry normal conditions. The stability on turns/curves is unmatched.
