I'm considering putting xm satellite into my s550. Ideally, I would like to put the antennae on the dash in front of the steering wheel, close to the windshield. Anyone have any experience with this? Does the windshield have any metal in it that would obstruct signals? Sirius satellite is not yet an option in Canada, and since I therefore need to basically start from scratch, I'm looking for the best and cleanest way to do the install. Any advice would be appreciated. Happy holidays to everyone!!!
The factory satellite receiver is installed to the trunk, left side. Wouldn't it be easier to wire the sat antenna to the back too, perhaps exactly as in the factory installation?
The windshield of an S550 is blocking radio signals (IR shielding). There is a small hole in the centre of the windshield, one at the bottom, one at the top area (see user's manual) but I would assume those being too small for good satellite reception.
I'm in a W220 not 221, but when I did my Sirius install, I tried inside as you suggest and it didn't work. I ran the antenna wiring behind the dash, out through the cableway in the passenger door up into the channel along the roof pillar behind the weather modling and I mounted on the passenger side roof right at the corner above the windshield. These installs are hard on these cars, I've done it on my S, my wife's M and on my old E and they are so well built and tight, there is no place to really pass wires (unlike when I did an XM install in my Forumula). Good luck....
