what is a reasonable price for this S550

I'm going into the dealership tomorrow to hopefully buy a silver S550. It's listing for $81k. It's pretty standard. Only has the P1A package? Ventilated seats and sirius radio. I've heard that this car has been receiving large discounts, because everyone is waiting for the 4matic or the nightview. Also, my local market has quite a few of these models on the mkt and in this color. My question is, is asking for $78k reasonable?

Also, any tips on how to negotiate would be appreciated.

I've heard most dealers will go $2k w/out too much pushing, but $4k off doesn't seem unreasonable to me. Let us know how you do.

And WELCOME a-board!!!

This may not help your decision but this car costs 88.100 euros in Germany, plus VAT (97.700 incl. VAT). With the current exchange rate this makes $116.000 (excluding tax, I assume this is comparable to your $81k) plus that you probably get a few extra accessories not included in the German price. But new cars generally lose value quickly, here it happens during the trip over the Atlantic ;-)

Did I calculate this right?

well, went to the dealership today. they had two prices (which i hate when dealers do this). it said on the car that it was listed for $84k then they dropped it down to $81,995. i told him i wanted $77k for it, but he said he could only do $80,450 and he showed me on some list he had that he would only make $500 on it. so, i told him i couldn't consider an offer if it's not below $80k. so, we shook hands and i left. conversation was pretty quick. 10 mins. really nice gentleman.

i have to say i was surprised that he did not even try to come down a little. they had three S550s on the lot with same options and about same mileage. plus, it was so dead. no customers. don't get it. maybe they were only going to make $500? although that's hard to believe.

Don't trust the paper that he showed you. He makes more than $500. He didn't go down further, cuz he knows that you will be back. Did you leave your phone number? I'm sure he will give you a call toward the end of the month with lower price.

You should be able to get a 4% discount, if it's a reasonable dealer. I've given that much off before.

The question is....do you have a trade-in?

i managed to get $4,675 off from my dealer... paperwork only came to $65 fee as well, which is a bit cheaper the usual from what i know.

Dealer had a bit of power over me because there were only two S550 4-Matics with the colors/options we wanted, for sale in the USA at the time.

Don't know about the states but I know that in most countries 5% is the minimum you should expect. in some countries you are actually given 5% without asking

You don't mean "US states" with "most countries"? At my place the car tax is significant and the car tax is defined from the list price. You cannot put the list price too high in this case and don't get more than 5% off. They already have to pay car tax from this 5% that they don't get from the customer.

Your statement about most countries is probably correct but one has to be careful when talking about the minimum if not taking into account every place in the earth where we have members in this forum (the globe is pretty well covered).
