Early days but I like the look of it.... there is a market for large four seat cabriolets and if there is one niche of the market that Mercedes should be in it`s this one.
The company has a distinguished history of building this type of vehicle and if they get it right it will be matchless.
The 770 Grossers of the `thirties together with the Maybach cabriolets were magnificent. Time to make a comeback.
CLASSIC! This time, they nailed it, right out of the gate. They NEED to build this, to always keep the competion behind them. Plus, they need a Benz with the BENZ name to count Bentley and Rolls, and this would definately be a $100,000+ car. Great design, MB.

Its designed to compete with this.
Benz no longer has lexus set in mind as their main competition. They're starting to step up into ultra luxury territory which is a very hard segment to capture. They have the Maybach which is in competition with the Roller Phantom and Bentely Flying Spur, but since Roller is releasing a less expensive convertible Benz wants to take a piece of the action in the Ultra luxury segment. The Car will not be badged as a Benz, it will be badged as a Maybach.

LondonRockz,
Certainly agree that the Rolls Royce convertible is one competitor but having thought about this at the time of my original post on this thread I do not think that the car will be badged as a Maybach. At some time there may well be a Maybach convertible and perhaps that car will benefit from the work that goes into developing a large MB cabriolet (based on the W221 chassis). Nevertheless, this car if made will carry the three pointed star.
I believe that DC is at a crossroads with the Maybach brand...... Dr Z has intimated that perhaps there is an argument for integrating the Smart and Maybach propositions into the whole so that both can benefit from the Mercedes brand.
Personally I do not think they need Maybach to compete with Rolls Royce or Bentley. The fact that DB made Europe`s taxis or buses or trucks didn`t stop the super wealthy from buying DB`s large limousines or expensive cabriolets.
On a totally different point I wonder if DC will make this concept car as a full four door cabriolet? Looks like it has fours doors in the studio photographs released.
