I have just taken delivery of an S320 CDi long wheelbase in the UK. Last August just before I placed the order I asked the salesman what were the possiblities of the V8 diesel becoming available in the UK. The answer was that due little demand the car would not be availabale in the near future. Great shame really as this is a car I really fancied. I could not afford to go up to the S500 V8 petrol model as the V8 with all of the options that I had on my S320 would have cost £82,000 ( $159,000 )
I was hoping that a V8 diesel if introduced in the UK would have been pitched at a price somewhere between the S320 and the S500 although I suspect it would not have been much cheaper than ther S500.

The price for an S500 in Germany is (2007 price list with 19% VAT) 97.699 euros while the price for an S420 CDI is 94.486 euros. The S500 Lang has a few extra accessories on top of the S420 CDI though.
I don't think I could have afforded and S420 CDI but even the S320 CDI makes 250 km/h top speed which is almost twice the max I need and acceleration is better than needed, Toyota traffic (that counts for many MB drivers equally) anyway mostly blocks the way for faster riding. Fuel efficiency on a 320 CDI is so much better than on the S420 CDI (comparing 320 CDI to smaller CDIs on the E class and 420 CDI also on the E class shows that the compromise of power an economy is pretty good on the 320 CDI).
Of course if I could afford I would take the 420 CDI or 500 or any of the bigger engines any day.
I was reading an article about the new CDI S420 too but something catch my eye and saw information on the S450 with 340HP. I am interesting to get more information on that model. Scroll down on the bottom and you'll see different model on their specifications.

S450 has been available for some time but has anybody heard about S280, W221 S280? This is not on sale in Germany but the EPC shows this engine model variant, V6 gasser. Could it be for some limited markets where the car tax is significantly lower for an S280 compared to an S350?

I didn't know the S450 and the new W280 were already out. So why is the US taking long to get them here.

S450 has been out for some time. W221 started with the S500 and S350 in Europe. I have not seen the S280 available anywhere (but I did see it listed on the EPC).
The smaller engines may never appear in the US. A bit odd that the 320 CDI is on sale in the US (on the E-class and others, not on the W221) while the 420 CDI does not seem to appear (its predecessor, 400 CDI was not sold in the US, unless I've mistaken).
