Mercedes Benz wants to bring the first hybrid car on the market at the beginning of 2008 . A "mild-hybrid" variant of the S-Class will have its world debut on combination with a new directly injecting petrol engine.
Daimler Chrysler already presented the concept at the 2005 IAA Motor Show: the S 350 DIRECT HYBRID and BLUTEC HYBRID concepts. The mild hybrid works by using an electric motor to provide additional power. The new S-Class comes to fight against the 430hp Lexus LS 600L.
What sort of figures are you after? I haven't looked at Lexus, but if you mean a compromise to the advantage of fuel efficiency, isn't S320CDI already there (except if you are in US, but the title was about manufacturers)?
S320CDI (SWB) gives 6.4-6.5 l/100 km for "non-city driving" (ausserorts), 6.5-6.6 l/100 km for the LWB model. This car does 7.5 s 0-100 km/h (100 km/h equals 62 mph, 6.5 l/100km I guess equals 36 US mpg).
If you mean the opposite, acceleration over fuel efficiency, then there is always the S65AMG with 4.4 s 0-100 km/h.

Okay, let's compare the S320 CDI with the S350 Vision Direct Hybrid. MB only published a combined fuel economy number for it, city and highway, of 8.3 liters per 100 kilometers.
