This may be a dumb question but can anyone tell me how the phone that comes with the car is gonna work. Do you need to set up your own service provider?? With all the talk about bluetooth im getting confused about how these phones are gonna work, do you need a blue tooth phone plus the phone thats in the car??

well, i don't know how it works anymore, but back when i had a 1997 S600, which had an integrated phone, you had to buy a service plan from Mercedes-Benz Themselves. you coulnt get your own plan, but either way, back in 1997, cell phones werent as popular as they are today. They weren't even called cell phones. They were called Mobile Communication Devices. No Joke.

The new S550 brochure says in a footnote not to use any cellphone other than those which are integrated into the vehicle since doing so might interfere with the car's electrical system. That's going to be quite a problem since no state of the art phones (e.g., Treo 650 or 700) is yet approved for use in the car. Anyone have any information on when Treos or such phones might be adapted?
This is why I'm confused...doesn't a phone come built in the car....how does that work??? The little flip phone that is on the center console by the command dial.....??
I actually discussed this with my dealer today as I was finalizing my order. What I was told was that the car comes pre-wired for cell phone integration, however you must decide either to purchase a cradle interface or bluetooth. My dealer told me that you can now purchase a cradle for any type of phone that you have, such as the Motorola RAZR, and you would simply dock the phone in the car as you have done in the previous S-Class, and the phone utilizes the car's power source as well as antenna. If you choose the bluetooth option, the phone no longer docks in the car, rather it stays with you and communicates with the car via the bluetooth technology but uses its own battery power and antenna. As far as I know, the phone will function the same, regardless of what you choose, but apparently the bluetooth module supposedly drains the cell phone battery very quickly. Sadly, the dealerships still are not clear on all the details, but so far, I believe this information is pretty accurate, however I'm still skeptical that if you choose the docking cradle, you can use any phone with bluetooth capability. Up until now, you had to choose from a selection of phones available from either Cingular, T-Mobile, or Verizon, but as I mentioned earlier, this should not be the case with the '07 S-Class. Hope this helps answer your question... I'll report back if I get any more details. Can't wait to get the car!
The cradles are supplied by AWS (the MB authorized phone specialist). There are only cradles approved for a limited number of phones which you can obtain from stores who handle the approved phones. Details can be found with AWS at http://www.wireless4mb.com/ I do not think a cradle for the RAZR had yet been appoved.
The BT module will take the place of the cradle for the phone and will integrate the your BT phone into the system. But you will not be able to use the cars antenna system nor will the phone be charged. Again details on the AWS site.
BTW...did you order the P3 Package? If so did they indicate any of the items were not yet available? I am getting ready to order one but want to be sure all parts of the P3 Package will be available.
