Another concern I have is availability. The local Bentley dealership has 8 on the lot at the moment and tells me one can be ordered and delivered in approximately 4-5 months. On the other hand, I know of no schedule when I'd even be able to SEE an S65 AMG, and nobody is taking orders, I hear.
While price is not the primary issue, the Bentley dealer has a $30,000 "Dealer markup" on the stickers, but the salesman said that since they have so many on the lot, they're generally selling them at the sticker price. The Benz dealer usually slaps on a huge "dealer markup" here to the more rare cars. . . and gets it.
For instance, I saw an SLR McLaren on the floor with a $250,000 "dealer markup" on it. I was told that it was the third one in the dealership, and that the first had sold with a $500,000 markup and the second a $300,000 markup over the $500,000 sticker price.
I have no idea what the dealership would want 'extra' for an S65 AMG, but suspect that it'd put the price way over the Bentely's.
A Spur was tested at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway and the top lap speed was 205mph. The car was new, with only several hundred miles on it, so when it loosens up, it will probably gain 2-3 mph on the top end.
If it is not limited S65 will certainly reach speeds more than 200mph.
And on the internet I saw lots of speedo pictures of E55s, S55s etc. which were moving faster than their limits. They cancel it or AMG versions come unofficially without speed limit??
The new S-Class is a way advanced car in comparison to Bentleys. But Bentley is more unique.
If you want asthetic and advanced technology W221 is the better choice. And if we think about an S65 AMG it is certainly unique, too.
I really prefer the technical features of the new S class, such as Distronic cruise control, presafe seats, infrared vision. . . you know the rest. I spent some quality time with the dealership's sample of the new S model and can say that it has a fine interior. However, the interior of the Benz really doesn't compare to the interior of the Flying Spur. What you give up in cool toys is compensated by what you gain in terms of leather , wood appointments and general "feel" of the Bentley.
Something I noticed in the Flying Spur was what I consider to be a lack of focus on the rear passengers. It is clearly a driver's auto and not one to be a back seat passenger. That is OK with me, since I generally drive myself and seldom ride in the back of our present vehicle.
