The SL & CL are sports cars, designed for a few, whereas the S-class is the flagship sedan, designed for high-end comfort. Sports cars can't, IMO, be flagship cars.
I will bet there are more S-class sedans sold than all SLs and CLs combined. Such rare breeds cannot be flagships, by definition.
Well I think for some companies a flagship can be a sports car, Nissan and the Skyline, Honda and the NSX, Ferarri and the Enzo, Aston-Martin and the Vanquish, Subaru and the WRX. (prolly the best example) Of course this is not the case for Mercedes, but I think it can be for some companies.

I would agree w/ Ferarri, Aston-Martin, Porche, and a few others, but Nissan and the Skyline, Honda and the NSX, and Subaru??? I don't think so.

well, i test drove a nissan maxima last month, and on the window sticker, it clearly says: " NISSAN'S FLAGSHIP" So i guess that kinda rules out nissan. I get what you mean with ferrari, and aston though.

I believe the S-Class is the flagship of Mercedes-Benz. It has always been there and will always be there, and the articles on the new S-Class agree. The CL is a good car, but not flagship, it just isn't made to be a flagship. As for the CLS it certainly can be called the most stunning and a very great car in some of the respects of the S-Class, but as far as flagship goes I think it has to be the tried and true S-Class.
Still to come back on flagship and its definition: meaning the best product that is made by a company (regardless of size, numbers of doors, toplessness, prize and how many they sell) I still think it is the CL (just check how the doors open (out and then forward) and close (ok other Merc's have it as well)
We could keep on discussing but at the end they're in same class, the weren't called SEC for nothing, it was the two doors version of the S and in my mind a coupe is always the better/nicer version of the fourdoor saloon, unfortunately nowadays the CLK isn't derived from the E-class anymore as the beautiful CE coupes of the eigthies.

Great video! But the CL65 is not the flagship MB car.
