The CLS is an E Class in an Armani suit. It is very nice and is definitely one of Mercedes more daring and striking designs but the flagship of the Mercedes Benz range?.... you`re having a laugh.
If the SL is not at the pinnacle of the range then the S undoubtedly is. That`s why it`s called the S Class (Spritzen).
Motoring journalists are already paying the new S221 the compliment of making the Maybach redundant which is in any case itself based upon a previous S Class (W140)and is as previous posters have pointed out not a Mercedes Benz.
Had there been a corresponding 600 Pullman about then it would be different but as it stands the S Class is top of the pile.

I surely hope not! because "spritzen" means squirting/ejaculating/pissing/ [8D]
If you mean "Spitze" as in top/peak I can understand.
When I was a kid, my father drove S-klasses, and he told me it stood for Sonder-klasse meaning extrordinary/Special. Which may be very plausible.
Anyway, I like to think that the CL is MB's only flagship together shortly followed by the SL.
Why:
1. the way they market it (only huge petrol engines, and therfore never any diesels) remember when last CL wasn't doing very well they made a CL420 downgrading to a 4L V8 that is something they didn't do with the current CL, the only way was bigger engines ! Compared to this the SL is even "cheap" with a V6
2. the price
and 3. standard features
Nevertheless, the new S-class is amazing ! The realism of dashboard-screen and the way the comand works... unbelievable
The SL & CL are sports cars, designed for a few, whereas the S-class is the flagship sedan, designed for high-end comfort. Sports cars can't, IMO, be flagship cars.
I will bet there are more S-class sedans sold than all SLs and CLs combined. Such rare breeds cannot be flagships, by definition.
I believe the S-Class is the flagship of Mercedes-Benz. It has always been there and will always be there, and the articles on the new S-Class agree. The CL is a good car, but not flagship, it just isn't made to be a flagship. As for the CLS it certainly can be called the most stunning and a very great car in some of the respects of the S-Class, but as far as flagship goes I think it has to be the tried and true S-Class.
