W221 open in Detroit?

Can anyone confirm whether or not the new S is open and not locked at the Detroit auto show? I've read where the new GL is not open.

I'm going to be there this weekend and am just curious.

Apparently its closed.

The 221 is closed, but the GL is open. Also none of the MB representitives seem to know if the S65 is a 5 speed or 7 speed transmission.

It is 5-speed. The 7-speed can't handle the torque of the 55 engine, so definately not the 65 engine. Read this: http://www.benzworld.org/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=1241163&start=1&fid=57 scroll almost half way down and you will see this:

The drive power is transferred to the wheels in the new S 65 AMG via the AMG SPEEDSHIFT five-speed automatic transmission with AMG steering-wheel gearshift paddles and DIRECT SELECT gearshift. The conventional automatic selector lever in the centre console is replaced by a lever on the steering column, which the driver nudges to select the transmission settings “P�, “N�, “R� and “D�.

The driver can use the “S/C/M� mode button in the centre console to select from the “Sport�, “Comfort� and “Manual� shift programmes that not only change the transmission characteristics but also the accelerator response and the spring/damper settings of the AMG sports suspension based on Active Body Control. The gears can also be shifted at any time using the silver-coloured aluminium gearshift paddles on the AMG ergonomic sports steering wheel.

S, GL, E wagon and R are all locked tight! I'm here and just returned from the floor. Quite disappointing too. No oweners lounge either.

It seems MB customer service is still falling. [:(!]

Perfect time to get people to order some new S Classes and GLs, and they fail at that.

What a shame.

Oh well, all dealers should have a W221 now. I just called our dealer and they have one!
