AMG Fires Back at Rivals With New 6.3-liter V8
Date Posted 08-30-2005
AFFALTERBACH, Germany — Of late, AMG has concentrated on artificially aspirated engines, namely supercharged V8s and turbocharged V12s. But that's all about to change when Mercedes-Benz's performance division unveils its new V8 at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month.
Dubbed the ML156, the new normally aspirated 6.3-liter V8 will make its Frankfurt debut in the Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG. The engine delivers 510 hp at 6,800 rpm and 465 pound-feet of torque at 5,200 rpm. AMG officials told Inside Line the large displacement allows 20-percent more torque than its chief competitors, while at the same time being lighter, more fuel-efficient and more drivable.
After it debuts in the ML63 AMG, the engine will go into the CLK63 AMG and E63 AMG, likely to be unveiled at next spring's Geneva show. In late 2006, the engine will make its way into the R63 AMG, and in early 2007, it will go into the C63 AMG and SLK63 AMG.
The ML156 engine won't be fitted into the AMG versions of the new S-Class — premiering at the Frankfurt show — the CL or SL until at least 2008. Those vehicles will feature more powerful versions of their current engines.
While this new engine is normally aspirated, AMG officials said the division will remain faithful to turbocharging where it makes sense.
First off, yes I'm a noob to this forum but not for Benz and I will profess upfront that I do work for one of the largest MB retailers in the US.
This last post is one of the most accurate I've seen and thank you for putting it up. I just wanted to put a *little* bit of clarification in there:
The "official party line" on the the S 63's is that they will all be in 2008 *model year* cars. So in response to our question "Can one expect to see this in 2007 or late 2006 in a MY 2008 car?" The answer was "Yes, most likely."
The one thing that MB has been sketchy on and I see there has been alot of speculation on in here is what will the 63 replace. Well as of right now, nothing, remember the 55's have been slightly modified (+17HP) and will continue for all of MY2007, as have the 600 V12, and the 65 has remained the same - all continuing through the 2007 MY.
The Detroit News had a small article on the S65 in todays newspaper. It was nothing too revealing they just basically talked about it's upgraded interior, and revised chassis. They where particularly impressed with the turbocharged v-12. They stated that it will recieve a 7 speed transmission to go along with it's 612 hp (which i believe is only a 7 hp upgrade over the 2006). It does 0-60 in 4.4 sec. I'm going to try to check it out for myself today and i'll let you know what they have to say at the autoshow.
whoa. 612 Horsepower. The old one had 604 hp. Imagine what you can do with that extra 8 hp.[:)]
That's not true. The old one also had 612 hp but US rating of horsepower is somehow different. You always rate these engines a few hp lower than Europe[;)]
