And its not as bad in person. I was bracing myself for a let down, but, damn that car has presence. The whole is much better than the sum of its parts. Not quite as big as I was led to believe, not even close to being a Maybach, but it is larger than the 220. I like the way they put the laurel badge back to the front of the grill. That's my pet peeve about MB, they are the envy of the world with that grill but it seems like they try to make it smaller and insignificant with every new model. Not with the new S though. Bravo.
The tail lights still don't do it for me, the painted stripes don't do anything. Maybe if they trimmed it in chrome? Didn't test drive it yet, will go when I have ample time to take everything in.

yea. it would be different if the stripes were reflective or something, but they have no purpose. They look a lot like the maybach lights as well.

I saw it too. Norb, did you see at Star Motors? That's where I saw this one. I agree about the reintroduction of the laurel badge to the grille. It's been gone since the W126 ended production. I think the tail lights would look better if they made them ridged like on the W140 and older models.

I saw one at the Winston-Salem dealership, black with a armagnac leather interior. The car definatly has it going on. I couldn't see the interior much, but it looked very nice, all the leather was very relaxed and natural looking. I crouched down in front of it to get a front profile and it has a subtle agressive nature that really is beautiful. I wish I had taken the camera and that they were open. I am good friends with a dealer down there, sold us the ML500, so he would let me look knowing that I couldn't buy it.
IMHO there is a big difference between the looks depending on whether you have a dark color (midnight blue or black) or a ligher color (silver). In the darker colors the 221 is elegant. In the lighter colors it is a bit cartoonish,
