Well they may not be the same in quality in your eyes, but look at the German built models, W220, W211, W210. They all have had bad things go wrong. It all depends on the manufacturer of the parts. A small portion may have to do with where it was built.

This is not just my view it's MB's strategy. They only build their models in US when their target is US market or when they think most of the demand would come from US.
What you say about German built models is a different story because they had technical failures caused by complex technologies. By the quality I mean workmanship quality and this is the point where US built models lacking.
