"most interesting is the new sedan’s interior, which appears to be heavily influenced by BMW’s 7 Series with its twin center console vents, large display screen and wood wraparound dash trim. Also, note the iDrive-like knob between the front and the rear seats. Interesting."
I want to know why is there a column shift on this car? I know some S-classes like the W108/109, a few W116s had column shift, but why the need to bring it back?

It's hard to think of a good reason. To be different? To leave room for the I-Drive controller? To provide an excuse for the butt-ugly console? The entire dashboard/console of this car is its major aesthetic failing. What a shame, because I like the car otherwise and I like current M-B dash/console designs.
I have to agree with you guys, the interior is really gross.
But it looks like from one of the pictures that they've added some features to the rear climate control system.
I wonder if they're making the 4-Zone climate control system an option. I think for the price that it should be standard. And considering the 2000+ Cadillac Deville has the rear auto climate conrol system STANDARD. [;)]
Rating the 221 from pictures you are right. Ugly butt, unsightly interior…
But last Saturday a hat the pleasure to explore a 221 in reality. It's a really great car. I want to own one!
When you are in the car, there is the god old 'welcome home' feeling Mercedes is known for. BMW failed with the new interior of the 'Bangle' models, but MB made it genius. From pictures it looks strange you can't understand the philosophy. You have to feel, to experience, to dive in the new interior and you will understand.
the interior is VERY nice in actual fact. when you actually sit down in it, the two consoles are really low down so it looks very different from the 7-series which is more "in your face". and the materials used are really good - can't really see it from the pics, you need to actually be in the car.
i was pretty shocked by the first pics too, but the Mercedes genes are clearly and well integrated and i like it now [:)]
