The W140 certainly is NOT the best S-Class. It is statistically the most problematic of all the generations. The W116 and W126 are examples of better engineering build quality than the W140; it's not an opinion, but rather a fact. Line a W126 560 SEL and a W140 S500 up and compare.

Well in terms of shape and styling,W140 is still the best looking. Not the quality or enjine problems[:D]
I agree [:)]
I had a 126, black with tint windows - ohh boy. Cops stopped me quite few time just to see if those were factory installed. I fooled few, but finally had to remove a tint [:(]
Sure 126 looked classy and it was a great vehicle especialy LWB.
Than the 140 came, and I loved the look of this vehicle. In my opinion this is the best looking S class ever. Even 220 I have how is the best driving experience I had, it is far behind the 140 looks. Far behind [:(].
The 140 in my view it the BEST LOOKING S class ever.
I think most people would agree that the W126 is the most successful S-Class that Daimler Benz have ever built. Whether it is the best S-Class that Daimler Benz has ever built is open to conjecture.
If we are making that judgement on statistical evidence the W126 has outsold all previous and subsequent generations of the class by roughly two to one and remained on sale for approximately fifty percent longer than either the W116,the W140 or the W220.Statistically therefore it`s the outright winner.
But, is it the best and what does that actually mean? Again,I think that most people recognise that the W126 raised the standards by such a margin that it was head and shoulders above the competition and could probably have remained in production and made good sales long after it was replaced by the W140 in 1991 and,I don`t think many would disagree that it was this model, together with the R107,that cemented and further reinforced Mercedes reputation worldwide.
But is it the best S-Class? By definiton each subsequent incarnation should be better than it`s predecessor and the W126 was universally recognised as a significant improvement on the W116. The W140 on the otherhand, whose huge development budget spiralled out of control and very nearly broke DB,was not universally acclaimed when it was introduced and never really succeeded in taking the W126`s place.
But the fact is is that it is a better car than the W126 in almost every aspect apart from it`s looks and even they have mellowed in such a way that although it retains that unprecedented road presence it is no longer obviously so given that today our roads are populated by equally large or larger vehicles.
The W140 is smoother, quieter, roomier and more comfortable than the W126. It is safer, faster and more responsive and the handling is in a different league.
The W140 shares it`s DNA with it`s W116 and W126 brothers and it is not accurate to say that these are examples of better engineering or build quality. If you doubt that just take a look at the doors on a W140 and compare them to any other S-Class. This attention to detail is mirrored everywhere else in the car.
It is however the most complicated car that DB has ever built and if it is not serviced in accordance with the service schedule it is likely to give rise to problems that owners of W116s and w126s will not experience.
So if it`s a better car than the W126 does this make the W140 the best S-Class? No. The W126 remains for the time being at least the benchmark S-Class. It would be nice to think that the W221 will take up that mantle but somehow you just can`t see it.
w140 the worst s-class by a mile. it was ugly and problematic. the 116 and especially 126 still look classy and graceful decades after production ceased, even during it's lifecycle the 140 was bogus and ugly.
126 was definitely the best
btw it's no surprise it had highest production figures - it was in production the longest
The W126 is definitely the best S-Class. To me, the W126 is like a facelift over the W116. The W140, although an engineering marvel, is pretty ugly and too big. That is probably the only drawback of the W140. I am so glad that I have a W220 and will most likely keep it forever. The new W221 looks terrible on the inside. The outside looks okay, but doesn't it look a bit more like an American car, particularly the Chrysler 300?
