Prefer the current e class design.
what the hey?
The E class deserves a COMPLETE makeover.
This is a car that has over 400 HP and what do they do? redesign it to look like a C class!
Yea, it does seem more C class in likeness, however I can't believe they removed the hood star.
Well, I take that as a retro styling change. You might recall that in times past they were actually separate. It was much more recent that the two emblems were combined -- not long after the radiator wasn't such a prominent feature unto itself IIRC.
I actually kind of like this change, but do think that the base of the hood ornament looks a little naked. Guess it's just having been used to the laurel at it's base for so long.
Hey, don't be so impatient to bash Mercedes. These are not official pictures. I can say this not the real facelifted E-Class. They also do not remove the star on the hood. It will be like the new S-Class, both on the hood and at the top of the grille.
And this is only a facelift, you can not expect a completely renewed car.
I will post some other pictures in a few minutes...
Lets get this back to S-Class. Saw the new W221 last night at the dealership. OK, where to start?
The GOOD:
- The word “monstrosity has now left my vocabulary in regards to this car.
-
- Jet black on this car is worth a million bucks towards softening the lines going on here, and there are a LOT of lines going on.
-
- Yes, it the 19 inch wheel package DEFINITELY brings out the wheel arches to what they are supposed to be.
-
- The dead on front view truly, TRULY, looks like an S-CLASS. The lights don’t look nearly so bad as they did in the pics, even from the side. The grill did make me wish I could graft it onto my W140.
-
- Dash board looks 10x’s more normal than in the pictures. That navi thing doesn’t look nearly as obtrusive as pics make it look. Of course, I wasn’t able to actually sit in it either.
-
- Looks like an aggressive, true sports sedan
The BAD:
- Looks like an aggressive, true sports sedan
- THIS is an S-Class? On a lot full of Benzes, and being there specifically to see if the new S-Class was in, I actually had to ask my wife, “What the hell is THAT?
- Almost CLS-like tapering in the back, giving a MUCH smaller appearance than even a W220. My wife’s only comments were repeating, “it looks small, it’s small, too small. As we viewed it, we parked out jet black w140 directly beside the jet black W220 and compared, (my kingdom for my camera at that moment!). The 1997 W140 definitely had it out sized. ( I will admit, in the face of this NEW of a model, the dating of the W140 stood out, but mind you, that’s only because it was on a new car lot besides the NEWEST of NEW cars. Stand alone, the W140’s majesty still looks fresh. )
- One thing about the W140 and W220 is that, among the Benz line ups of their respective years, you can DEFINITELY tell it’ an S-CLASS. These new lines on the W221 are so similar to other cars in the line up, from the CLS to the C-Class, the un-Benz-trained eye will have to ask, “what model is that?. Before, even that clueless housewife or guy at the gas pump KNEW you just pulled up in the BIGGEST Mercedes. Now, a guy whose owned two S-classes, at a glance, had to ask his wife what model of car that was. OH, which brings me to my next bullet point;
- Hind quarter side profile DOES look like a BMW 745. The rest of the car was blocked when I first laid eyes on it, and all I could see was dead-on hind quarter side profile
- Interior def LOOKS the smallest yet, due to the “bucket ness and “wrap-around of even the rear seating.
-
Over all, I wished I could have pulled up a fold out chair and just SAT and STUDIED both cars in contrast for about hour. Those 19x9’s in the back were WORKIN’ it, looked more like 19 x 9.5’s. However, something just was “off with the whole rear. BTW, the taillights with that black were integrated PERFECTLY.
So, over all, if they had introduced this as all new “Class, for example, I don’t THINK I’d have that much beef. But as the continuation of a legendary bloodline, a lot left me scratching my head.
