C indeed stands for COUPE. However, W215 CL no longer use that designation as the chassis number is different. HOWEVER, W140 chassis was used for both S-Class and CL-Class. There, C is put there to distinguish each model.<br>

S600(L) = S600 Sedan<br>
S600C = S600 COUPE<br>
<br>
Notice I bracket the "L" as the L is not behind the designation for pre-1998 model year W140s.<br>
