Hi everyone, im new owner of 05 s430 4 matic. I have couple small issues. 1: front left turn signal wont work,(mirror and rear work's). 2: there was a problem with central vacuum system, previous owner fix electric motor but never marked vacuum lines and now figure out have to connect them back. 3: rear left license plate light wont work but i think problem be in harness by trunk lid. Thank you for input.
First up, I've got to ask, have you changed the bulbs ??
Do not prod around with power probe or test wires, most all the functions on these cars are controlled by SAM units or other Modules, so you'll likely end up frying one if you aren't fully conversant with Mercedes Electrics / Electronics :crying
I'll give you the same advice as I give every new Mercedes owner, you need to get Star Diagnostic System, (SDS), in order to work on these cars efficiently.
Swapping parts / guessing / botching will cost you mega $$$.
Do not be tempted to buy cheap Code Reading Equipment, it is a waste of time on these cars :wink
Vacuum / Pneumatic, (PSE), lines in Trunk...........
If the previous guy disconnected them sensibly, without un taping / cable tieing them then it should be real easy.........
Look very carefully at the line plugs, there are one or 2 that are different and will only go into one socket in the PSE Unit, put these in first, and the rest should line up exactly where they go :wink
hi Dave, yes bulbs is good. What you think SAM can be damaged or its be something else?? All fuses looks good. What be yours recommendation for scanner ( there is one in amazon icarsoft i980 $120 or some different brand around $180 ). Im right about license plate light ?? its be harness ?? Thank you Dave
Raivo you need to get a star diagnostics setup.. Usually about $5-800.. I saved a good bit by buying the D630 laptop on eBay for $43 and then a kit for about $600 with the hard drive, all the cables and the C4 multiplexer. I found one with the better hardware too.
Icarsoft 980 is specifically what he was talking about when he said DO NOT buy a cheap code reader like that !! It is not much better than a $30 generic obd scanner that's only good for codes that trigger the check engine light
It will not help you with the electronics portion of the car at all
I couldn't possibly tell you what is wrong with your lights without running the car on SDS.......
This is exactly why you need one.
It might be SAM Unit, it might be wires it might be a plug it might be ......... etc etc etc
SDS will allow you to read the relevant control units, switch the items, look at actual values and will guide you through a series of tests to determine EXACTLY where the fault lies :wink
Otherwise you just keep changing parts until it's fixed = $$$$$$$$$
One other simple thing you can check is the bulb and wiring plug connections on the relevant lamps, they should be clean and making good contact........
DO NOT apply any power to a lamp unit to test it unless it is un plugged from the cars wiring loom :wink
Another voice for getting a STAR Diagnostics System. There's no way I would've had a chance of fixing any of my current or previous W220's without one.
Here's an example, just one of many. On my S600 TT, I had just replaced the valve cover gaskets. Naturally, while things were apart, I made sure to clean those valve covers thoroughly; this meant the toothbrush treatment with kerosene as the solvent. After reassembly, the engine started going into limp mode, i. e. power was severely limited. Had no idea what the heck was going on. Hooked up SDS, and there it was--a non-functional camshaft position sensor. Replaced it, and all was fine. Without STAR, there's no way I would've known what to do...even that a thing called a camshaft position sensor was even there.
On one of my S430's and my buddy's new-to-him S500 (both 2003 models), we diagnosed some AIRmatic issues. Ran through all the tests and nailed it down to which specific air spring was leaking. Turned out to be the front left one. The right one was starting to show cracks in the epoxy as well, so he just went and did both of 'em.
Those are just a few examples of several that I've run into. I use STAR all the time, and if you're going to be doing DIY work on these cars, you really do need a STAR setup. With some careful shopping, you can get a full system for about $600.
