Fuel Pump Change

Hey guys, I'm surprised that I cannot find a good DIY for changing out the fuel pump on the W220. I know it's pretty straight forward but I always like to do my research before tackling a job. My main concern is the larger diameter hose that goes to the pump from the tank I assume, should I just clamp that line off to avoid excess fuel spill or would that put too much stress on the 14 year old rubber? I really want to make this as least messy as possible. Any tips are greatly appreciated.

Don't worry about crimping, just wait to start the repair until after fuel pressure has equalized (ie don't cycle the key and prime the pump right before you start). Clean off the top of the fuel tank once you pull the access plates off to keep anything from falling into the tank when you pull the pump. You can always keep a shop towel in your hand and catch any fuel spills with that when you unhook fuel lines.

Oh wow that's right, under a protective panel on the driver's side. You're talking about a couple of ounces of fuel that will drip out if, maybe a quart. You could just lay cardboard down and that would soak it up. You'll get fuel on your arms and such, but it shouldn't be that messy. Maybe do the repair outside to keep fuel vapors from building up inside the garage.

Looks to be fairly easy. You do have to pinch off the fuel line, step #5 in the instructions. I changed the fuel filter in mine but not the pump. The only thing that I remember is that I wish that I would of changed one of the fuel lines because I had to damage one side and cut that part off in order to get the filter off. I was able to get it back together having just enough hose left for fitting. New hoses might not be a bad idea as the original ones could be brittle from age.

Anyway attached is the WIS instructions:

I would like to confirm Bob' recommendation to replace the hoses as well. I replaced the fuel filter recently without changing them and discovered a leak in the hose between the pump and the filter afterwards. I discarded the old hose and clamps. I also followed the advice given on a previous thread to use Oetiker clamps. The connections appear to be very solid.

Ok guys job done. It actually wasn't as bad as i thought, after pinching off neccessary lines and re using the stock clamps everyrhing works great. The new pump is definitely much quieter and startup seems a bit quicker. Thanks again for the tips!!
