Hey guys I just purchased a 2000 s430 and the other day while I was showing my friends the raise feature things started to go wrong. I raised the car several times that night and eventually realized that the rear of the car was all the way down and not rising. When I push the airmatic button it says vehicle rising but nothing happens anymore no pump noise or hissing. If I leave it on raise long enough I get a visit workshop warning and I ended up resetting it by turning the wheel all the way to the left and right then remove the key. I have triple checked the 40 amp fuses and purchased a new airmatic relay with no luck. I ended up taking the pump off and hooking it up to a battery and it does run so I put it back on the car. I learned from another forum how to bypass the relay with some wire and a 40amp fuse and that makes the pump run. So I tried pushing the airmatic up button and bypassing the relay to make the pump work but the car still will not rise?!?! :crybaby2: With the new relay if i push the airmatic button nothing at all happens no noise no pump. But if I bypass the pump and let it run I do hear the occasional hiss from it releasing excess pressure. The top of the front struts look fine they have been a little lower than normal height but the rear is all the way down like LOW! I dont know where to turn at this point Im a diy guy and would go to the dealer but want to try everything else first. Maybe its the airmatic ecu that is my only other guess?!? I was thinking about going to the arnot coversion but If i can keep the airmatic that would be ideal it rides better anyway! HELP!

How is it possible to bypass the pump (A9/1)? Please have a look at the picture.

You can hear the hiss because there is still enough pressure in the system (pressure capsule -> 42).

Please check the cables connected to the compressor. May be something is corroded or broken.

... The thing im thinking is maybe one of the wires to the relay is bad like the 12v that turns on the hot wires for the pump...
The hot wire for the relay comes directly from the main fuse in passengers footroom. If there should be an fault some other devices in the relay box would not work - so no.

Have a look at the fuse. The fuse is situated in line with the relay. So check voltage at incoming of the fuse while the relay is on or bridged.

So I did a test where I see if the pump is getting power with the new relay in by putting a light bulb in where the 40 amp fuse goes to the pump. No light so the pump is not getting power from the relay. Like before I can still bypass the relay using wire and connecting the two prongs, Reply ^^. So from this info it seems like the relay is not activating and its a brand new relay. I was trying to check the fuse that bullet head was talking about but I cant tell which one it is from any of the fuse diagrams. its the fuse for the airmatic relay if it even has one. I need to get a service manual so I can follow the wiring diagram, and suggestions?

May be you have a wrong relay or someone with malfunction?

The last time I'd changed the relay the number was A002 542 72 19.

Some fuses have different names depending on date of purchase, but F32 (relaybox) is a good choice. Look also at F9 (engine compartment leftside) and f46 (also relaybox engine compartment rightside).

So Ive checked all of the fuses in the driver side compartentment as well as the passenger and the rear passenger seat and still found nothing, fuse 46 is good, cant seem to find 9 anywhere in the diagrams so thats why I checked all of them and still no Luck at making the car try to raise. Its like something is not activating the relay, I guess it could be a short ?!? if the fuses are fine but I would assume they would blow if a short was happening. I ran the pump buy bypassing the relay for a few mins now the airtank has some pressure and it will hiss now and then when I turn off the car and get out but still no movement in any struts.....

I just bought the car and it was running fine a few days ago, if the rear had a leak the pump would run until it burn out..... the car to low warning has yet to come on tomorrow ill jack up the rear and see if that stimulates anything,

Let me explain my circumstance and you tell me if its the same as yours. When I bought the car, I never heard the pump running. Suddenly the "airmatic low" prompt shows up sporatically. Using my 12v porta pack, I ground out the -ve and touch the positive to the 40amp fuse. I hear the airmatic pump activate. Short across the relay and I hear the pump activate, but regardless of the cabin button position, the car won't rise or turn on the pump.

I succeeded in having DAS interigate. Via DAS, the pump would turn on but here is probably the clue, it would only deliver 8 bars of pressure. Its suppose to be 11 or 12 bars I believe. So my take on it is the computer is shutting it down because it can't deliver the necessary air pressure to lift the vehicle. Time for a new pump I'm afraid as that is what I did, replaced mine with a purchased unit from Arnott. Worked right away.

Your milage may vary, but I'm guessing the pump.

Let me enlighten you. These vehicles have air suspension struts that have a service life of about 10 years or 120k miles. Sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less. When its time to change them, change them all including the suspension pump, filter and relay.

As a dealer selling Mercedes, Volvo and BMW primarily, I will tell you that I typically replace all of these items on a vehicle of that age. I also replace the front suspension components at that time since they tend to share the same service life.

My cost to do a full suspension change on an S-class of this vintage, plus reman air struts all the way around is around $2300 so you should expect to spend close to $3000. There are no short cuts and you can rationalize all day long about fuses, relays, diodes, dashpots, etc. but nothing will repair a leaking air strut except for a new or reman unit. Its like a tire failing. Fine one minute and flat the next.

Is there any chance that the rear height sensor link has failed? and the car does not know its rear is collapsed? That would be an easy fix? If you think the aircompressor has failed, try lifting the front corner with a trolley jack the opposite side should rise with it suggesting the pump is supposed to be off because it has adaquate stored compressed air in its tank. Lets us know how you resolve this issue.
