After a couple hours of research, seems like it could be a transmission plug transmission fluid leak or a broken conductor plate.

Well I finally got under the car to check if there's any sign of oil leak in the adapter plug area, and this is what I found...

I was expecting it to look like this (borrowed image)

What kind of transmission do I have!?

Thanks in advance

This is a guess - but the '05 RWDs had 7-speed transmissions designated 722.9. The S430 began being equipped with them for the '04 model year. The 4Matics retained the older 5-speed (722.6) transmissions.

I am not familiar enough with them to be certain of which is which, but I suspect your upper photo is the 7-speed, and the lower, the 5 speed. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will confirm or correct.

In any case, the conductor plate of the 7-speed trannys has been experiencing some failures, at a higher rate than the 5-speed trannys. See Mercedes-benz will not sell valve body for mercedes 722.9 transmission Jason's space for one discussion of the problem.

Here is a bit more on the 5-speed (722.6) - http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w210-e-class/1463460-mercedes-benz-722-6-transmission-faq.html - unfortunately I do not have anything as good on the 722.9. What I have is at http://foreignmotorworks.com/Mercedes-Benz-Transmissions.html, http://myautoworld.com/mercedes/car...es/cars/2010mercedes/mercedes-7-speed-automatic/mercedes-7-speed-automatic.html, http://www.micro-tronik.com/mercedes_benz_7-speed_automatic_transmission_203.html, and http://europeantransmissions.com/Download/mercedes-trani.PDF - but they are not as helpful as loubapache's thread on the 722.6.

Oh that link is very disturbing. Looks like this car is never going to get fixed :(

If you give me the vehicle VIN# then I can tell you which transmission your vehicle was fitted with from new, but that transmission does not look like a 722.6. What is the mileage on the car?

This is why I'm glad I have the 722.6 in my 4Matic. I wouldn't have a 2005-07 with a 722.9. All will fail prematurely. My 2006 ML350 had a valve body and control module put in at 53k.

Benz Community - thanks for all the great info and insight you all provide. I need your help regarding a "Pre-Save Inactive - See Inst. Manual" message. I bought a 2004 S500 with 33k mi about 4 mos ago and occasionally get the "Pre-Save Inactive - See Inst. Manual" message. Usually, restarting the car cleared it. Recently, I completely ran out of gas. (Not good and I'll make sure that never happens again). I refilled the tank and the check engine light was on. Later that day, I got on the throttle hard to clear what I thought was any "debris" from the fuel line that may have existed from being low on gas, and noticed a hard shift as the car went into limp mode. At this point, it was stuck in 2nd gear. I "limped" to work and tried restarting several times to clear it, but no luck. I tried the steering wheel technique with no luck. I called my indy repair guy and he said it could be the speed sensor or the valve body in the transmission, which he said only the stealership could repair at about $1,500. He said to bring it in, so I "limped" to my indy shop and he ran diagnostics with no errors found. It was a simple reset and the car ran fine...for a few days. It happened again, with nothing to really provoke it. 1 MALFUNCTION showed on the dash, but a restart of the car cleared it and the car shifted fine...for a couple of days. It happened again yesterday, and a restart cleared it.

In reading many posts regarding Pre-Save and Limp Mode, it seems it could be many things... a weak battery, a TCM, electrical connector, a valve body, a speed sensor, etc. Tonight, I bought an Equus Innova Diagnostic Tool and hooked it up to the car. It produced code P0718 Turbine/Input Shaft Speed Sensor Circuit Intermittent. Can anyone determine for sure what my problem is and more importantly, cost? After all the reading on these forums, I'm thinking valve body. The transmission is a 7spd, so I think a 722.9?

Thanks in advance for your help...

The important thing here is to determine exactly which transmission you have fitted, your vin # will help me here.

#22 ·
Transmission is 722.901 so the valve body is suspect.

#24 ·
It is part of the data card for your car listed in EPC.

This may not be a complete list of MB vehicles with 722.6xx transmissions, but it's close enough for government work.
