I just took the mirror glass off. Take the mirror cover off (search the forum this is really easy), release the metal clip (looks like a long paper clip streched straight) attached to the mirror. You should be able to wedge the mirror off at that point. I forget if I disconnected the power cable before or after I took the mirror off. It's only attached with a double sided tape of some sort. It was a lot easier than I thought, but you do need to take that cover off.

Can you share why you're doing this?
I'm assuming that the glass is broken or otherwise not working as it should.
Also, are you replacing with OEM glass (auto dimming)?
The glass and the whole assembly are almost equal in price from what I've reserached.

I'm only asking because my driverside mirror is acting strange and I'm getting a light sensor error. Maybe you're having the same issue and I'd like to shed some light on my little annoyance.

To remove only mirror glass follow pictures.
1. move mirror glass down.
2. Unclip little pin, and replace mirror glass.
I replaced blinkers that way. To replace blinkers you need to remove glass, then slide plastic cover of, but watch for cable. I hope thats helps

Hi, is there a trick to removing the mirror glass on a pre-facelift W220?

I have removed the mirror cover and retaining spring fine. However, apparently there is then a "clip" or clamp that needs to be pushed in a specific direction (I am referring to the following instructions when trying to change out my mirror glass - https://w220.ee/Exterior_mirrors#Remove.2Finstall_mirror_glass)

I cannot find the "clip" or "clamp" that is referred to as item 6 in the steps. Even with the retaining spring off, the existing mirror glass doesn't feel like it wants to come off the drive yet - and I don't want to break anything.

Pictures or a video would be appreciated if possible.

I got it...eventually. A somewhat delicate operation.

It was some plastic tabs I had eyeballed earlier, which are part of the mirror glass backing - there are two, but I guess the instructions are based on only one needing to be pushed (away from the drive) to help get the glass off (I pushed the one on the other side as well). Also worth noting, a square piece of double-sided tape is used at the factory, to further secure the glass backing to the drive - if changing out the original glass (backing), the glass just has to be pulled and manipulated until it comes off the drive at this point (you have to break the seal of the double-sided tape).

Getting the electrical connector to the glass off (for the heating and auto-dimming) was tough as well, but I managed to get it out eventually without breaking anything. Possibly there was some notch that I needed to press harder to loosen the connection.
