Loose Turnsignal Stalk on 2001 S500

As the title says the turnsignal stalk is loose. When I go to activate it, the lever moves about 1/4inch with the trim ring before starting to activate the switch. Makes for a very long travel before activation. Very annoying in heavy traffic. I had a similar problem on my W210 and cut a template for drilling a hole in the plastic of the column. Then just tightened a screw to secure the trim around the signal lever.
I did some searching here, but could not find anything out about thing on the W220 class. Any help would be much appreciated

Yeah me neither. I tried searching here and a couple other forums + google, but no joy :(
I would bet there is a screw that needs tightening, but am not willing to use my w210 template for marking and drilling. I had to say three hail-Mary's when I drilled my e320 even after a German MBZ tech friend at the time assured me it was ok.

Personally I would remove the steering wheel and inspect the switch mechanism and housing first and look for a broken tab or loose screw or something before I attempted to randomly drill and screw into the column trim. It takes less than 10 minutes to pull the airbag and wheel off....

I know this is an older posting, but I had this problem and found the problem to be quite simple to fix. There is a small access hole located on the lower portion of the steering column shroud. Using a 4mm allen key, I tighted it down and no problems!! This was on a 2000 S500. I could not get a good picture, but sniffing around google, I found the following video:

If you forward to 0:52, you can see what I'm talking about. Note that the steering wheel does not need to be removed to access this.

I hope this helps someone in their future searches!!
