Occasional ESP / BAS error messages

More frequently now, my vehicle instrument cluster will display two very annoying messages...

BAS : Brake Assist Error
and
ESP : Electronic Stability Error

I'm not sure what these are but if I turn off the car and re-start, the problem goes away. Anyone have suggest what I can do to fix this problem? My car has no problems at all, OBD2 does not produce any errors.

Hey Tabocat, have you tried the ESP re-sync procedure yet? There is a post in the encylopedia sticky under the resetting procedures... but basically you turn your steering wheel lock to lock a couple of times to re-sync the ESP system. Here is the post:

Synchronizing ESP (ECU):

If the power supply was interrupted (battery disconnected or empty), the BAS/ESP malfunction indicator lamp may be illuminated with the engine running. Turn steering wheel completely to the left and then to the right. The BAS/ESP malfunction indicator lamp should go out. For more on resetting the entire ECU, see http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w208...procedure.html.

Have the battery and charging system checked first of all and a diagnostic test to read the fault codes and then clear the fault codes.

In this instance there may not be any fault codes as it appears to be soft fault/event codes and once the ignition is switched off the code is cleared.

ERIC.

The battery is new, and I never had a problem with the alternator as all electronics are running fine. I will try the turn left and turn right trick, but not sure how that would fix the problem...

I had a similar issue.
Turned out to be the front right speed sensor.
Ive posted here about it.

If you have a faulty sensor, ABS and BAS cant function as they rely on the speed of all 4 wheels to stop you skidding etc.

My errors flashed after driving 30 mins or so. Just take care when braking in the wet.

Cost me Around £70.
I might be totally wrong but i did have the same error and turning engine off and on resets it.

Sorry chief, but my OBDII sensor is a cheap £25 one.
Only gives engine faults. So dont know.

It was my mates garage and when he plugged in his box of tricks
front right speed sensor got logged.

But a quick search of google threw up this.

The OBD2 sensor at the garage picked it up.

Did you change the speed sensor yourself? It sounds like an easy DIY...
