2001 S600 Suspension Conversion Kit

Had my pump go bad on my 2001 S600 and decided that the car was not worth replacing both the pump and valve body so I have decided to replace the suspension with the Strutmaster conversion kit. I will report on what I think about the ride.

By the way . . . For sale 2001 S600 Hydraulic Struts both front and back. Local Mercedes dealership can confirm that shocks are fine. Can buy all four for less than the price of one shipped to 48 states. I am located 20 minutes outside of NY city and can deliver within a short distance.

I'm not 100% sure but I DON'T think that kit will work for your 600. That kit is for the s430/500 rwd with airmatic. The abc pump is a tandem pump which controls both suspension and power steering. On the s430/500 you would use a power steering pump from an airmatic car. I don't believe that pump would work for the m137 v12 , also the conversion companys have not yet found a way to keep abc warning lights off. Arnotts is in the process of making a kit , I would wait and see what they got. Don't think your going to survive without changing the abc pump, if this was a rwd airmatic or abc s430/500 it could of worked.... not on the 600. Goodluck

The guys there says it will work. This kit is for the S600 with hydraulic. The hydraulics are just capped at each shock. I had contacted Arnott and they do not have an ETA (was supposed to be last month) on when their kit will be ready, so I can't wait on what might be (have been on their calling list). Pump works fine for the power steering. We will see if there is a way around the ABC lights with the included resisters or another way. Would be interested in seeing what others have done to get around the error light.

i bought a rebuilt pump for $650 and had everything installed for less than $1400, everything works good as new. do not see why you do not go that route. you are going to spend more than that buying the conversion kit and installing it.

I also had to have the valve block replaced which would be another $1000 so between pump and valve block that would have been $2400 on the low end. When one shock goes you have to replace two of them so that is another $650 a piece for rebuilt ones from Arnott plus installation which would bring the total for two installed to about $2000. If you have to replace all four (and you will sometime) that would be another $2000. Total bill going with rebuilt on the absolute low end to replace the pump, valve block, 4 struts would be $6400 (I have not heard of anyone getting by with this low of price, closer to $10,000) So comparing apples to apples $1500 suspension kit installed to $6400 with rebuilt installed (replaced pumps fail more often than originals also) on a car with a blue book value of about $13,000.

I am still waiting for replacement struts for the front as the original springs did not hold the weight of the front at all. I should have them this week.

The only safe way to convert that car is to install sway bars. I would be very careful when driving that car without them. That actually can be very dangerous without sway bars to prevent leaning during cornering or braking. We have done some testing with the ABC system without using sway bars and it was not good at all. Hope everything works out for you though!

Thanks
Adam
